Chapter 1

Chapter 1: The Fall
The long gravel driveway crunched beneath Sarah’s tires, as if resisting the small Honda carrying her toward the Vance estate.
The mansion loomed before her, built of white stone with black shutters and towering windows that reflected nothing but the gray afternoon sky.
Eight months pregnant, she parked as close as possible to the side entrance and sat for a moment, hands resting on the steering wheel, breathing through the dull ache spreading across her lower back.
She had come for one reason only.
Just one.
Her clothes.
A few boxes she had left in the guest room after the funeral.
Nothing else.
She had repeated those words to herself throughout the drive from the tiny apartment she now rented above the town’s old hardware store.
Get in.
Get out.
No trouble.
The side door was unlocked, as it always was for the family.
She stepped inside, carrying an empty suitcase.
The air smelled of lemon cleaner and old money.
Her shoes made barely a sound on the thick carpet that ran through the kitchen and up the back staircase.
Inside the guest room, she moved carefully, supporting her aching back with one hand.
The bed was still perfectly made, exactly as the maids had left it months ago.
She opened the closet and slowly packed away the few dresses and sweaters that still belonged to her.
Most of the expensive clothing Eleanor had bought for her during Sarah’s short, difficult marriage had already been left behind.
She didn't want any of it.
From the side pocket of her purse, she carefully took out the latest ultrasound image.
It had been taken just three days ago.
The baby’s tiny profile was clearer now.
A small hand rested against her cheek. Sarah sat silently on the edge of the bed and allowed herself thirty precious seconds to admire her daughter.
Just thirty.
Then she would leave.
The bedroom door flew open without a knock.
Eleanor Vance stood in the doorway.
Tall.
Perfectly composed.
Dressed in a cream silk blouse and navy blue trousers.
Her silver hair was immaculately styled in place.
She closed the door behind her with the calm confidence of someone who had never accepted "no" for an answer.
"So..." Eleanor said coolly. "You're still here."
Sarah quickly tucked the ultrasound into her bag and stood up.
The baby shifted gently beneath her ribs.
"I'm almost done. I'm just taking what's mine."
Eleanor’s eyes slowly swept over the half-packed suitcase. The open closet. Then Sarah herself.
"Everything in this house belongs to me now." She paused. "Including whatever it is you think you're taking."
Sarah lowered her voice.
"I just want to leave. Please."
Eleanor took a step forward. The room suddenly seemed much smaller.
"Show me what's in your bag."
"It's nothing."
"Show me."
Sarah hesitated. Finally, she opened the bag and took out the ultrasound. Holding it carefully by the corner, she said softly:
"It's from last week. The doctor said she's perfectly healthy."
Eleanor snatched it away anyway. She held the image up to the light as if examining a forged document.
For several long seconds, she said nothing.
Then...
She tore it cleanly in half.
The sharp sound of tearing echoed through the silent bedroom.
Sarah stifled a cry.
"No..."
Eleanor tore the pieces again. And again. Until the tiny, jagged fragments fell onto the carpet between them. "That child has no place in this family." She looked Sarah straight in the eye. "And neither do you."
Sarah stared helplessly at the shredded photograph. A tiny fragment still showed the blurred outline of a small foot. Her hands were trembling too violently to try to pick it up.
She turned toward the door.
"I’m leaving."
Eleanor stepped into her path, blocking the way.
"You aren't leaving my house until I say you can."
Sarah tried to move around her. Eleanor’s hand shot forward. Her fingers dug painfully into Sarah’s arm.
"Let go of me," Sarah whispered. "Please. You’re hurting me."
Instead... Eleanor tightened her grip.
"Do you think a swollen belly and a scrap of paper give you rights here? I built this family. I control this family. And I decide who stays and who goes."
Sarah struggled. But Eleanor was far stronger than she looked.
She dragged Sarah toward the upstairs hallway. Toward the large stair landing.
Right ahead... the elegant wrought-iron railing overlooked the marble foyer, nearly four meters below.
Down below... Mrs. Hargrove, the longtime head housekeeper, was conversing in low tones with two maids near a large decorative urn. The three women looked up when...
...or footsteps echoed upon them.
Eleanor shoved Sarah toward the railing. Instinctively, Sarah placed a hand over her stomach.
"Eleanor..." she pleaded. "I’m eight months pregnant. I can’t..."
"You should have thought of that before trying to trap this family with your little problem." Eleanor leaned in close enough for only Sarah to hear. "You... and that baby... are finished."
Sarah tried desperately to break free.
"Please..."
Eleanor suddenly let go of her arm. For a split second, Sarah thought it was over.
Then, Eleanor slammed both hands hard against Sarah’s chest.
Sarah’s back hit the cold iron railing. For one terrifying heartbeat, she thought she had regained her balance.
Then came a second shove. Harder. Her feet left the ground.
She screamed.
Chapter 2

Part 2
Strong arms caught her before she hit the floor.
Arthur Hale. The estate manager.
He had stepped silently out of the shadowed archway leading to the butler’s pantry after hearing raised voices upstairs. The instant Sarah fell, he lunged forward.
One arm beneath her knees. The other shielding her back.
The impact forced him to take two steps back. But he never let go. Years of military training kept his balance steady. He absorbed the full force of the fall before gently lowering Sarah to the cold marble floor, shielding her with his own body.
"I’ve got you." His voice remained calm. "Sarah... I’ve got you. You’re safe."
Sarah clung desperately to his jacket. Pain shot through her back. Then lower. Much lower.
"My baby..." she gasped. "Arthur... Please... Is he okay?"
Arthur was already reaching for his phone inside his suit jacket while keeping a steady hand on her shoulder.
"Breathe with me. Inhale. Exhale. Slowly. The ambulance is on its way."
He dialed 911 without taking his eyes off Sarah.
Upstairs... Eleanor froze. Total shock washed over her face. Then she ran toward the staircase.
"Arthur!" she shouted. "Hang up that phone immediately! This is private property! She tripped! It was an accident!"
Nearby... Mrs. Hargrove stood motionless. She had witnessed Sarah’s fall. Now... she looked down at the clipboard in her hands and pretended to check some documents. One maid covered her mouth in horror. The other leaned against the wall, unable to move.
Arthur never looked away from Sarah. His voice remained calm on the phone:
"I’m calling from the Vance Mansion." Number forty-seven Ridgewood Lane. Eight-months-pregnant woman. Fell from the second-floor landing. Possible abdominal trauma. Send an ambulance. And the police. Immediately.
Eleanor reached them. She lunged at Arthur.
"I said hang up! This is my house! My rules!"
She tried to snatch the phone from him. Arthur turned his body slightly, keeping Sarah shielded. Without raising his voice, he said:
"Don't touch her." Then his eyes met Eleanor's. "And don't touch me."
Eleanor straightened slowly. A loose strand of silver hair had escaped her perfect hairstyle.
"You'll regret this, Arthur Hale. Twenty years. You've worked for this family for twenty years. And this is how you repay me?"
Arthur stared straight into her eyes. His face remained expressionless. Only his eyes had changed. Cold. Hard. Like steel.
"I caught her," he said quietly. "I saw exactly what she did."
The color drained from Eleanor's face. Then it rushed back in a wave of furious red.
From somewhere in the east wing... heavy footsteps approached rapidly. Private security. They were already responding to the shouting.
Eleanor turned toward the hallway and screamed:
"Security! Get over here right now! This man is interfering in a private family matter! Take the phone away from him!"
Sarah lay trembling on the marble floor. One hand pressed protectively against her stomach. Searching. Waiting.
Then... a tiny kick. Followed by another.
A sob escaped her lips. Tears rolled down into her hair. Scattered across the marble, near her fingertips, lay the shattered pieces of her baby's ultrasound. A small fragment rested within reach. It showed only the delicate outline of a small foot.
Sarah reached out with trembling fingers. She took it. And she clutched it tightly.
Arthur’s free hand gently covered hers for just a second. Warm. Firm.
"I’ve got you both," he whispered, so softly that only she could hear. "The ambulance is on its way."
Above... Eleanor was still screaming. But her voice sounded more distant now. The sharp edges of the torn photograph pressed into Sarah’s palm.
Mrs. Hargrove finally looked up from her clipboard. For a brief moment... her eyes met Sarah’s. Then she looked away again.
May you like
Sarah closed her eyes. She gripped the piece of her baby’s photo even tighter. Something had to change. She couldn't spend the rest of her life begging. Not anymore. But that certainty could wait. Right now... all she could do was breathe through the pain. Pray for another kick. And trust the man kneeling beside her.
Arthur remained exactly where he was. His body shielded Sarah from the approaching security guards. The phone was still pressed to his ear. His voice remained calm as he repeated the address one last time. Sirens couldn't be heard yet. But they were coming.
