Released in 1970 under the band name Derek and the Dominos, “Layla” didn’t just arrive as another rock single; it emerged as the most naked, desperate love letter Eric Clapton would ever write.

At the time, the song was born out of an impossible predicament: Clapton’s intense, unrequited infatuation with Pattie Boyd, who was then married to his close friend, Beatles guitarist George Harrison.

From the very first second, “Layla” grips the listener with its iconic seven-note guitar riff. It doesn’t sound romantic; it sounds like a siren. It is urgent, frantic, and filled with a tension that refuses to let up.
