— THE CALL THAT SHOOK THE WHITMORE EMPIRE

PART 2 — THE CALL THAT SHOOK THE WHITMORE EMPIRE

Fiction

For three long seconds, only static answered.

Arthur kept his eyes on the mansion.

Richard Whitmore was still standing on the front steps with one arm draped casually over a porch column, smiling as though he had already won.

Then the voice returned.

Calm.

Measured.

Professional.

"Authentication code."

Arthur opened the laminated card with hands that had not touched it in fifteen years.

"Blackbird Seven. Echo-Nine-Two-Four. Confirm Code Black."

Silence.

Then—

"Identity confirmed."

Arthur closed his eyes for the briefest moment.

A part of him he had buried with his wife suddenly came back to life.

"What is the nature of the threat?" the voice asked.

Arthur looked through the windshield.

"My daughter."

Another pause.

"Injured?"

"Yes."

"In immediate danger?"

"Yes."

"Local authorities compromised?"

Arthur watched the Chief of Police laughing beside Richard near the barbecue.

"Confirmed."

The operator did not hesitate.

"Stand by."

The line went quiet again.

Lily shifted painfully beside him.

"Dad..."

"I'm here."

She reached weakly for his hand.

"I'm sorry."

Arthur turned toward her.

"What are you apologizing for?"

"I thought... if I tried harder... he'd stop getting angry."

Arthur's heart broke.

"No."

His voice was barely above a whisper.

"You never apologize for someone else's violence."

Tears rolled down Lily's bruised face.

"I didn't want to disappoint you."

"You never could."

He gently brushed a strand of hair away from her swollen eye.

"You hear me?"

She nodded.

"You have never disappointed me."

Back inside the mansion...

Margaret Whitmore watched Arthur's truck through the living-room window.

"He'll be back with some small-town lawyer," she scoffed.

Richard accepted another glass of champagne.

"Or he'll cry to the sheriff."

Several guests laughed nervously.

Only one woman did not.

Emily Dawson.

A young nurse from the county hospital.

She had been invited because Margaret chaired the hospital charity board.

She had watched everything.

Every slap.

Every lie.

Every excuse.

She finally spoke.

"Someone should call an ambulance."

Margaret slowly turned toward her.

"My dear..."

Her smile never reached her eyes.

"You saw nothing."

Emily swallowed.

"I saw Lily bleeding."

Richard stepped closer.

"It was an accident."

"No."

Emily shook her head.

"It wasn't."

The room became painfully quiet.

Richard's smile faded.

"I'd be careful."

Emily met his eyes.

"So would I."

She picked up her purse.

"I'm leaving."

Margaret blocked the doorway.

"You signed a confidentiality agreement for our foundation."

Emily almost laughed.

"It doesn't cover assault."

She pushed past Margaret and walked out.

Richard watched her disappear.

Then he looked toward the driveway.

Arthur's truck was gone.

"So much drama..."

He raised his glass.

"Easter isn't ruined yet."

Five miles away...

Arthur pulled into the emergency entrance of Saint Matthew Medical Center.

Doctors rushed Lily inside.

A trauma nurse stopped him.

"We need to evaluate internal injuries."

Arthur nodded.

"I'll stay."

"You can't come into imaging."

"I'll wait."

As Lily disappeared through the double doors, Arthur suddenly found himself alone.

Completely alone.

For the first time since receiving her phone call.

His phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

He answered.

"I'm listening."

"This is Director Helen Brooks."

Arthur recognized the voice immediately.

She had once supervised operations no one officially admitted had ever existed.

"I thought you were retired," she said.

"I was."

"You don't activate Code Black because of a neighborhood dispute."

"It isn't."

"What happened?"

Arthur explained everything.

He mentioned Richard.

Margaret.

The Chief of Police.

The witnesses.

The threats.

When he finished...

Helen said only one sentence.

"We've already started checking the Whitmore family."

Arthur frowned.

"What?"

"The name triggered historical files."

"What files?"

"I can't discuss them over an unsecured line."

Arthur's expression hardened.

"Does this involve Lily?"

"Possibly."

A chill ran through him.

Helen continued.

"Stay where you are."

"Why?"

"Because three federal vehicles are already heading toward your location."

Arthur looked toward the hospital entrance.

"You moved that fast?"

"We moved before you called."

His heartbeat slowed.

"What does that mean?"

Another pause.

"It means someone else activated an alert thirty-two minutes ago."

Arthur's stomach tightened.

"Who?"

"We don't know."

"But whoever it was..."

"They reported that a woman named Lily Miller was in immediate danger."

Arthur felt every muscle in his body go rigid.

Someone had known.

Someone had expected this.

Before Lily had even called him.

Back at the Whitmore estate...

Richard's phone buzzed.

He smiled.

Probably another Easter greeting.

Instead...

His face drained of color.

The screen displayed only four words.

FEDERAL ACCESS REQUEST APPROVED.

Before he could react...

Six black SUVs turned into the circular driveway.

Not police.

Not state investigators.

Black vehicles with government plates.

Every guest stopped talking.

The Chief of Police slowly lowered his drink.

"What the hell..."

The lead vehicle stopped.

Its doors opened.

Men and women in dark suits stepped out with disciplined precision.

No one rushed.

No one shouted.

One woman approached the front entrance carrying a sealed folder.

She looked directly at Richard.

"Richard Whitmore?"

"Yes?"

She handed him a single sheet of paper.

He read the first line.

His confident smile disappeared.

The warrant authorized investigators to seize every electronic device, financial record, surveillance archive, and private office belonging to the Whitmore family.

Richard looked up.

"There has to be some mistake."

The woman answered calmly.

"We're only here because of today's assault."

She paused.

May you like

"Everything else..."

"...we discovered on the way."
