Chapter 10 — The Trust Victor Couldn’t Touch

Samuel Hart had not only left recordings.
He had left protection.
Elias placed a key on the library table. It was old, brass, and tied to a faded blue ribbon.
“Your father knew Victor was trying to get control of the Hart shelters,” Elias said. “So he moved the most important assets into a trust.”
Claire looked at the key.
“What trust?”
“The Hart Haven Trust. It owns the land under six family shelters, two medical clinics, and the old community school in South Boston.”
Claire stared at him.
Victor had told her those properties were gone. Sold to pay debts. Lost after her father’s death.
“He lied,” Elias said, reading her face. “Your father protected them. And he named you sole trustee.”
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“My father trusted me?”
“With everything.”
Elias handed her a document.
Claire read the first page. Her father’s signature was at the bottom. Real. Familiar. Strong.
Then she saw another line.
Temporary protector: Elias Stone, until Claire Hart Whitmore is safe to assume control.
Claire looked up sharply.
“You protected it all this time?”
Elias nodded.
“Victor spent years trying to find a way in. He couldn’t. That’s why he needed you obedient. That’s why tonight mattered. The donation announcement was a cover. He planned to merge the Whitmore Foundation with Hart Haven next month.”
Claire felt sick.
“He was going to steal my father’s work.”
“He was going to try.”
Claire closed the folder.
For the first time that night, she did not feel only pain.
She felt purpose.
Victor had taken years from her.
But he had not taken the work her father died protecting.
Claire stood.
“Then we stop him completely.”
May you like
Elias looked at her, and something like pride crossed his face.
“No,” he said gently. “You stop him. I’ll stand beside you.”
