Chapter 2: The Kingdom Crumbles

Chapter 2: The Kingdom Crumbles
For years Daniel had walked through these rooms acting like a king.
Now he looked like a tourist who had lost his map.
"That's impossible," he said.
I folded my arms.
"You signed the prenuptial agreement."
"I never read it."
"That's not my fault."
The officers exchanged glances.
Vivian suddenly changed tactics.
She pointed at me.
"She tricked him!"
The officer wasn't interested.
"Ma'am, the documents are valid."
Then he turned to Daniel.
"More importantly, we are investigating an allegation of domestic assault."
The confidence drained from Daniel's face.
For the first time, consequences had entered the room.
The officers photographed my injury.
Collected statements.
Reviewed security camera footage from the hallway.
Daniel kept insisting it was a misunderstanding.
But nobody was listening anymore.
Because the evidence was speaking louder than he was.
Then came the final humiliation.
The officer asked him to leave the apartment for the evening pending further investigation.
Daniel stared.
"You want me to leave my own home?"
The officer looked down at the deed.
"Not your home."
The words hit harder than any slap.
Vivian nearly choked.
Daniel looked at me.
For years he had expected tears.
Apologies.
Fear.

Instead he found calm.
The one thing he never knew how to fight.
