Chapter 2: The House of Secrets

By sunrise, Howard drove Emily to the family estate where she had grown up. Snow covered the massive property like a white blanket. For years, Emily believed this house represented security. Now she wasn't so sure. Her parents seemed shocked when Howard entered through the front door without warning. Her mother forced a smile. "Dad, what a surprise." Howard said nothing. Instead, he placed copies of the bank records across the dining room table. The color drained from her face instantly. Emily's father attempted to laugh. "There must be some misunderstanding." Howard slammed his cane against the floor. The sound echoed through the entire house. "Then explain two million dollars." Nobody answered. Emily looked from one parent to the other. Her mother avoided eye contact. Her father suddenly became fascinated by the window. Years of excuses, manipulation, and half-truths began unraveling in real time. Then Emily noticed something strange. Her younger sister wasn't home. Not unusual on its own. But when Howard asked where she was, panic flashed across both parents' faces.
Minutes later, investigators arrived with a search warrant. What they discovered stunned everyone. Hidden inside a locked office were forged signatures, fraudulent property documents, and dozens of letters addressed to Emily that had never been delivered. Some were birthday cards from Howard. Others contained checks. One envelope had been mailed ten years earlier. Emily opened it with trembling hands. Inside was a handwritten note from her grandfather. "No matter what anyone tells you, you will always have a home with me." Tears filled her eyes. She had spent years believing Howard didn't care. Yet evidence showed he had tried repeatedly to reach her. Then a detective uncovered something hidden beneath a false drawer. A birth certificate. Not Emily's. Not her sister's. A third child. A baby girl born twenty-seven years ago. The room fell silent. Emily looked up slowly. "Mom..." she whispered. "Who is Sarah Bennett?" Her mother's knees nearly gave out. And suddenly everyone realized the stolen money wasn't the family's oldest secret.
