CHAPTER 8 – The Choice Lily Makes

CHAPTER 8 – The Choice Lily Makes

The courthouse steps were cold beneath Lily Hawthorne’s shoes.

They had changed her into a pale blue dress that morning—soft, careful, chosen by people who thought colors could decide futures. Her hair was braided neatly, a ribbon tied at the end like a promise she hadn’t made.

She stood between two worlds.

On her left, the woman in red waited.

Eleanor Hawthorne looked perfect, as always. Her heels didn’t touch the ground so much as command it. Her lipstick was flawless, her smile gentle enough to fool cameras, jurors, strangers. She held out her hand as if Lily were a possession being returned.

“You’re safe with me,” Eleanor said softly. “You always have been.”

Lily didn’t take the hand.

On her right stood Mara.

No heels. No perfect posture. Dark circles beneath tired eyes. Her coat was wrinkled, her hands shaking—not from fear, but from restraint. She had learned how to stay still when everything inside her screamed.

She didn’t reach for Lily.

She had promised she wouldn’t.

Instead, she knelt so their eyes were level and said only, “Whatever you choose… I will love you.”

The words landed heavier than any speech.

The judge cleared his throat behind them. Lawyers murmured. Cameras waited like hungry insects. Everyone expected Lily to move.

She didn’t.

Because this wasn’t just about where she would live.

It was about who she was allowed to be.

Lily looked at Eleanor.

She remembered locked doors. Whispered rules. Being told her name was dangerous. Being loved like a secret—beautiful, controlled, suffocating.

Then she looked at Mara.

She remembered burned dinners. Soft singing at night. Hands that trembled when they held her, not because of power—but because of fear of losing her.

Mara had lied once.

Eleanor had lied every day.

Lily took a breath. A real one. The kind she’d never been allowed to take.

She stepped forward.

Not toward the red dress.

Toward the woman who had nothing to offer her but truth.

The courtroom froze.

Mara’s breath broke. She didn’t move, afraid the moment would shatter if she did.

Lily reached out on her own.

“I choose her,” Lily said.

Her voice was quiet.

But it didn’t shake.

Eleanor’s smile cracked—just for a second. Long enough for everyone to see the fury underneath. The control slipped. The mask fractured.

“This is a mistake,” Eleanor said sharply. “She’s confused.”

Lily turned back.

“No,” she said. “I was confused before.”

Silence fell like a verdict.

The judge nodded slowly. He wrote something down. The gavel would come later—but the decision had already been made.

As Mara finally wrapped her arms around Lily, holding her like something precious and breakable, Lily felt it.

Not safety.

Not certainty.

But freedom.

Outside, the sky opened into clean, unforgiving blue.

And for the first time in her life, Lily Hawthorne wasn’t being chosen.

She was choosing.
