Chapter 7: The Breaking Point

Last night, the entire fragile structure of our lives collapsed into chaos.

It was raining heavily outside, a torrential downpour that caused the old gutters to groan under the weight of the water. Inside, the air in the nursery felt incredibly thick, almost hot, despite the air conditioning being set to low. Lily was having the worst coughing fit of her life. Her face was a terrifying shade of dusky purple, her small hands clutching at the air as she choked on her own breath. I had the nebulizer mask strapped to her face, but the vapor seemed to do nothing to stop the violent rattling inside her chest.

Through the loud hum of the nebulizer machine, I heard the sound. It wasn't the usual scratching. It was a loud, wet CRACK.

I turned around, my heart in my throat. Daisy had used her entire snout as a battering ram. She had successfully punched a massive, irregular hole directly into the center of the drywall, right at the level of Lily's mattress. Her head was submerged into the wall cavity up to her ears, her back legs kicking wildly as she tried to force her entire body into the dark space between the studs.
