CHAPTER 3: THE TRUTH THEY STOLE

CHAPTER 3: THE TRUTH THEY STOLE
Charles remained frozen outside Evelyn's hospital room long after his mother wheeled her toward the NICU.
One sentence echoed relentlessly in his mind.
He deserves to know his grandmother.
Not his father.
His chest tightened as the realization settled deeper than guilt.
He had not only lost Evelyn's trust.
He had lost the right to be considered part of Rowan's world.
For the first time in his life, there was no contract to negotiate, no executive to intimidate, no amount of money capable of fixing what had been broken.
Only time.
And even time might not be enough.
Three hours later...
Jennifer Collins arrived at Burden Development Group expecting an ordinary Monday.
The lobby was unusually quiet.
Employees whispered as she crossed the marble floor.
She smiled politely, pretending not to notice.
When the elevator doors opened on the executive floor, Marcus Chen was already waiting.
"Good morning," she said.
Marcus didn't return the greeting.
"Charles wants to see you."
Jennifer frowned.
"At the hospital?"
"No."
"In the boardroom."
She glanced at her watch.
"The board meeting isn't until ten."
"It is now."
Something in Marcus's expression made her stomach tighten.
Charles stood alone at the enormous conference table overlooking downtown Seattle.
For years, this room had been his kingdom.
Here he had bought companies.
Destroyed competitors.
Decided the futures of thousands of employees with a single signature.
Today...
It felt like a courtroom.
Jennifer entered with her tablet under one arm.
"You wanted to see me?"
Charles looked at her for several silent seconds.
She shifted uncomfortably.
"Is something wrong?"
Without speaking, he slid a thick envelope across the polished table.
Jennifer's face drained of color the instant she recognized the handwriting.
Evelyn's.
Charles watched every tiny change in her expression.
The widened pupils.
The quick swallow.
The slight tremor in her fingers.
She knew.
"You intercepted these."
Jennifer tried to recover.
"I... I don't understand."
Charles opened the folder.
One by one...
He placed every unopened letter on the table.
Every certified receipt.
Every printed email.
Every voicemail transcript.
"You told me there were no messages from Evelyn."
Jennifer remained silent.
"You told me she had stopped contacting me."
Still nothing.
"You lied."
Finally she spoke.
"I was protecting you."
Charles laughed.
It wasn't amusement.
It was disbelief.
"Protecting me?"
"She was trying to manipulate you."
"With ultrasound pictures?"
Jennifer's confidence began to crack.
"You were finally happy."
"No."
Charles stepped closer.
"I was comfortable."
"There is a difference."
Jennifer looked toward Marcus as if searching for support.
She found none.
Charles's voice became frighteningly calm.
"Who told you to hide these?"
"No one."
"Jennifer."
"No one."
His hand slammed onto the conference table.
The sound echoed through the room.
"Don't lie to me again."
She flinched.
Tears formed in her eyes.
"It wasn't supposed to go this far."
Charles's heart pounded.
"It was Sienna."
Jennifer closed her eyes.
Silence.
That was answer enough.
Marcus exhaled slowly.
Charles felt something inside him collapse.
"How much did she pay you?"
Jennifer whispered the number.
"Fifty thousand dollars."
Marcus stared at her.
"You sold a child's father for fifty thousand dollars?"
Jennifer began crying.
"I thought she was telling the truth."
"What truth?"
"She said Evelyn wanted to trap you."
Charles's voice dropped.
"And you believed her?"
"You hated your ex-wife."
Charles shook his head.
"No."
He looked out the window.
"I hated facing the man I became around her."
That afternoon...
Sienna Voss returned to the penthouse expecting to collect her belongings.
Instead she found the locks had already been changed.
Her phone rang.
Charles.
She answered immediately.
"So you've finally calmed down."
"I know."
Her smile disappeared.
"Know what?"
"About Jennifer."
Silence.
Then...
"I have no idea what you're talking about."
"I know you paid her."
"You can't prove that."
"I don't need to."
She laughed.
"You've changed overnight."
"No."
Charles replied quietly.
"I've finally woken up."
Her tone sharpened.
"So what now? You're going to crawl back to your ex-wife?"
"I'm going to become worthy of my son."
"You'll fail."
"Maybe."
"And if you do?"
Charles looked toward the hospital visible in the distance from his office window.
"Then I'll fail trying to be a better man instead of succeeding at being a worse one."
He ended the call.
For the first time...
He blocked someone else's number.
At St. Aurelia Medical Center...
Evelyn was finally allowed to hold Rowan.
The nurse carefully placed the tiny infant against her chest.
Instantly...
His crying stopped.
A tear slid down Evelyn's cheek.
"Hi, sweetheart."
Rowan opened sleepy blue-gray eyes.
"They're his father's eyes," the nurse whispered.
Evelyn smiled sadly.
"I know."
She kissed Rowan's forehead.
"You'll never have to earn my love."
The baby curled one tiny hand around her finger.
"You already have it."
A knock interrupted the moment.
Doctor Amelia Foster entered carrying a folder.
"How are we feeling?"
"Sore."
"That's expected."
The doctor pulled up a chair.
"We need to discuss your heart."
Evelyn nodded.
She already knew.
"The damage is significant."
"How significant?"
"Your heart is functioning at only thirty percent."
The room became quiet.
"What does that mean?"
"It means recovery will take time."
"Will it recover completely?"
The doctor hesitated.
"I honestly don't know."
Evelyn looked down at Rowan sleeping peacefully.
"What if it doesn't?"
"You'll need medication."
"And?"
"You may never be able to have another pregnancy."
Those words landed heavily.
Not because Evelyn dreamed of another child...
But because someone else had decided that choice for her.
Her body had paid the price.
Outside the room...
Charles heard every word.
He hadn't intended to eavesdrop.
He had simply been bringing flowers before realizing the doctor was inside.
Now he stood frozen.
Never another pregnancy.
Because Rowan had almost cost her life.
Because she had gone through months of medical appointments...
Alone.
His grip tightened around the bouquet until several stems snapped.
A nearby nurse noticed.
"Sir?"
Charles looked down.
The white lilies were crushed in his hands.
He quietly placed them into a trash bin.
"I'll buy new ones."
The nurse gently stopped him.
"Maybe..."
She smiled kindly.
"Don't buy flowers."
He frowned.
"What should I bring?"
She thought for a moment.
"Consistency."
That evening...
Margaret Burden invited Evelyn's older brother, Daniel Marsh, to the hospital.
Daniel arrived within the hour.
The moment he saw Charles outside the NICU...
He crossed the hallway without slowing down.
Charles stood.
"I know you're angry."
Daniel punched him.
Hard.
Charles hit the wall before sliding onto one knee.
Several nurses gasped.
Marcus rushed forward.
Daniel pointed at Charles with shaking hands.
"You don't get to apologize."
Charles slowly stood.
"You have every right."
"I watched my sister cry herself to sleep for months."
"I know."
"You don't know anything."
Daniel's voice broke.
"She almost died asking the nurses whether her son would ever meet his father."
Charles lowered his eyes.
"I deserve that."
"No."
Daniel stepped closer.
"You deserve worse."
Hospital security appeared around the corner.
Evelyn's voice suddenly echoed from the hallway.
"Daniel."
Everyone turned.
She stood beside her wheelchair holding Rowan against her chest.
Daniel immediately softened.
"I'm sorry."
She shook her head.
"No."
Then she looked at Charles.
"I won't allow violence around my son."
Daniel clenched his fists.
"He deserves one punch."
Charles answered quietly.
"He already gave it to me."
Evelyn held Charles's gaze for several long seconds.
Then she spoke the words that would change everything.
"If you really want to be Rowan's father..."
Charles's heartbeat accelerated.
"...then start by proving you can be a decent human being."
"I will."
She nodded once.
"I'm being discharged in three days."
Charles waited.
"I don't want money."
"I understand."
"I don't want expensive gifts."
"I understand."
"I don't want promises."
Charles swallowed.
"What do you want?"
Evelyn looked down at Rowan.
"When this little boy is old enough to look for you..."
She met Charles's eyes again.
"I want him to find someone worth looking up to."
Without another word...
She wheeled Rowan back toward her room.
Charles watched them disappear down the hallway.
For the first time since Rowan's birth...
He wasn't thinking about winning Evelyn back.
He wasn't thinking about forgiveness.
He wasn't thinking about redemption.
He was thinking about becoming the kind of father his son could someday choose...
Even if that choice took years to earn.
And as Charles turned toward the elevator, completely unaware of the danger approaching...
Across town, Sienna Voss sat inside a luxury law office, sliding a confidential envelope across an attorney's desk.
Inside it was a forged document.
At the top, in bold black letters, were the words:
PETITION FOR SOLE PATERNITY EXCLUSION
Sienna smiled coldly.
"If Charles wants a new family..."
May you like
She leaned back in her chair.
"...I'll make sure he loses it before he ever gets the chance."
