Chapter 4 — The Fall of the Cross Family

The news broke before Damian reached the lobby.

His phone vibrated relentlessly.

One notification.

Then another.

Then dozens more.

BREAKING NEWS

Cross Technologies Removes CEO Damian Cross in Emergency Board Vote.

Montrose Global Holdings Revealed as Controlling Shareholder.

Anonymous Benefactor Identified as Billionaire Heiress Isabella Montrose.

Within twenty minutes...

The story had spread across every major business network.

By noon...

It dominated every television screen in the country.

Outside Montrose Global Headquarters...

Reporters crowded behind security barricades.

Camera flashes exploded like lightning.

Journalists shouted over one another.

"Mr. Cross!"

"Did you assault your wife?"

"Did you knowingly deceive shareholders?"

"Is the theft accusation fabricated?"

"Is your relationship with Vanessa Hale the reason for your removal?"

Damian lowered his head.

For years...

He had enjoyed walking through those same cameras.

Today...

They hunted him.

Security rushed him into the back seat of a waiting sedan before anyone could ask another question.

Inside...

He stared blankly at his reflection in the window.

His assistant called.

"Sir..."

His voice sounded broken.

"I... I don't know how to tell you this."

"Tell me what?"

"Our stock..."

Damian closed his eyes.

"...is falling."

"How much?"

A long silence.

"Thirty-eight percent."

His heart sank.

"And it's still dropping."

Across town...

Evelyn Cross sat inside the mansion's drawing room.

The television remained muted.

It didn't need sound.

Every headline displayed Isabella's photograph beside the Montrose family crest.

The woman Evelyn had mocked for carrying an old leather handbag...

...was now being described as one of the country's most influential business leaders.

The housekeeper entered nervously.

"Mrs. Cross..."

"What?"

"There are people outside."

Evelyn frowned.

"Reporters?"

The woman swallowed.

"No."

"Repossession agents."

The front gate opened.

Six black SUVs entered the estate.

Behind them came two moving trucks.

Several men in dark suits stepped out carrying clipboards.

Their leader approached the front door.

He rang the bell once.

Twice.

The butler answered.

"Good afternoon."

"I'm here on behalf of Montrose Asset Recovery."

He handed over a thick envelope.

"Effective immediately..."

"This property has entered legal repossession."

Evelyn snatched the documents from the butler.

"What nonsense is this?"

The man remained calm.

"The mortgage guarantee belongs to Montrose Holdings."

"The guarantee has been withdrawn."

"The outstanding balance is now payable."

She laughed bitterly.

"We can pay."

The man looked at his tablet.

"Actually..."

"Every Cross family account has been frozen pending the financial investigation."

The smile disappeared from Evelyn's face.

"No."

She grabbed her phone.

Called the bank manager she had known for fifteen years.

He answered immediately.

"Evelyn..."

"Please tell me this is a mistake."

"I'm afraid it isn't."

"I need access to my accounts."

"I'm sorry."

"They've been frozen under court authority."

"My personal account too?"

"All of them."

"My investment fund?"

"Frozen."

"My jewelry insurance?"

"Canceled."

"My credit cards?"

A painful pause.

"Declined this morning."

Evelyn dropped into a chair.

Her hands trembled violently.

For the first time in decades...

She didn't feel powerful.

She felt helpless.

Meanwhile...

Vanessa Hale was living a very different nightmare.

She arrived at the luxury penthouse Damian had secretly rented for her.

Two suitcases in hand.

A confident smile on her face.

She entered the lobby.

The concierge looked uncomfortable.

"Miss Hale..."

"Yes?"

"I'm sorry."

"Your access has been revoked."

She laughed.

"There must be some misunderstanding."

The concierge handed her an envelope.

"The lease has been terminated."

She frowned.

"It was paid for a year."

"It was."

He nodded politely.

"But the payment originated from Cross Technologies."

"The company's corporate accounts have been frozen."

"The apartment now belongs to the receiver."

Vanessa stared at him.

"You can't throw me out."

"I'm afraid..."

"The locks were changed an hour ago."

She stood on the sidewalk in five-inch heels.

Two expensive suitcases beside her.

Her phone battery nearly dead.

Every call she made went unanswered.

Friends who once begged to attend her parties suddenly became unavailable.

Fashion brands canceled their sponsorships.

Her social media manager resigned.

Even the tabloids that had celebrated her beauty now called her "The Other Woman Who Cost a CEO Everything."

She had spent years climbing toward luxury.

In a single afternoon...

She had nowhere to sleep.

Back at Montrose Global...

Isabella stood inside her father's private office overlooking the city skyline.

Behind her hung portraits of four generations of the Montrose family.

Her father, Edward Montrose, quietly entered carrying two cups of tea.

He placed one beside her.

"You've barely eaten."

She smiled faintly.

"I wasn't hungry."

Edward studied his daughter.

"When you insisted on marrying Damian..."

"I warned you."

She nodded.

"I know."

"You wanted someone who loved you..."

"...not your name."

She looked out the window.

"I thought I had found him."

Edward sighed.

"I watched every year."

"I wanted to intervene."

"But you asked me not to."

She closed her eyes.

"I believed people could change."

"And?"

"They did."

She turned toward him.

"They became worse."

Edward placed another folder on the desk.

"Our investigators found something."

Inside were photographs.

Bank records.

Private messages.

Wire transfers.

Isabella's expression slowly hardened.

Vanessa hadn't acted alone.

There had been another player.

Someone inside Cross Technologies.

Someone with access to confidential financial information.

Someone who had secretly been leaking company strategies to competitors for over a year.

Edward folded his arms.

"The betrayal runs deeper than your marriage."

At that exact moment...

Richard entered hurriedly.

"We have a problem."

Everyone looked toward him.

"Our forensic team uncovered unauthorized transactions."

"How much?"

"Nearly one hundred and fifty million dollars."

Edward's eyes narrowed.

"Who approved them?"

Richard answered quietly.

"Damian's Chief Financial Officer."

"He disappeared three hours ago."

The room fell silent.

Across the city...

The missing CFO sat inside a private hangar.

A passport in one hand.

A boarding pass in the other.

A black suitcase rested beside his feet.

He smiled.

By this time tomorrow...

He would be living on a private island.

No extradition.

No investigation.

No consequences.

Or so he believed.

A familiar voice interrupted him.

"Going somewhere?"

He turned.

Federal investigators.

Corporate fraud detectives.

Montrose security.

And Richard Hale.

The CFO's smile vanished.

Richard held up a sealed arrest warrant.

"You've been charged with corporate fraud..."

"Money laundering..."

"Conspiracy..."

"And embezzlement."

The handcuffs clicked around his wrists.

That evening...

Every major television station interrupted regular programming.

A live press conference was about to begin.

At exactly six o'clock...

Isabella Montrose stepped onto the stage.

Hundreds of cameras focused on her.

Microphones covered the podium.

The room became completely silent.

She looked directly into the cameras.

"My name is Isabella Montrose."

"For four years..."

"I chose to remain invisible."

"I believed loyalty spoke louder than titles."

"I believed love required sacrifice."

She paused.

"I was wrong."

A reporter raised his hand.

"Mrs. Montrose..."

"Will you seek revenge against the Cross family?"

She answered without hesitation.

"No."

The room looked surprised.

"I don't believe in revenge."

"I believe in accountability."

Another reporter stood.

"Will you destroy Cross Technologies?"

She shook her head.

"Thousands of innocent employees depend on that company."

"They will not pay for the mistakes of a few."

"I built that business to create opportunity."

"I won't let bitterness destroy what honest people helped build."

Her words spread across the country within minutes.

For the first time...

People understood why Isabella had succeeded where others had failed.

She wasn't driven by anger.

She was driven by principle.

Late that night...

Damian sat alone in a cheap motel on the edge of the city.

The luxury mansion was gone.

His office was gone.

His reputation was gone.

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

"Hello?"

A calm female voice spoke.

"Mr. Cross..."

"This is the District Attorney's Office."

"We need you to come in tomorrow morning."

"Regarding what?"

"A criminal investigation."

His grip tightened around the phone.

"What investigation?"

The answer came like a hammer.

"Fraud."

"Conspiracy."

"And assault."

The line went dead.

Damian slowly lowered the phone.

Outside...

Rain began falling against the motel window.

For the first time...

He understood something Isabella had known all along.

Losing his company had only been the beginning.

Tomorrow...

May you like

He would face the law.

And the truth would finally become impossible to escape.
