CHAPTER 2 – THE WOMAN EVERYONE MISJUDGED

CHAPTER 2 – THE WOMAN EVERYONE MISJUDGED

The ballroom erupted.

"What?"

"She owns this place?"

The bride's confident smile disappeared.

She stared at the older woman in disbelief.

"That's impossible."

The groom calmly handed the legal documents to the wedding coordinator.

She scanned the first page.

Then another.

Her hands began to shake.

"It's true."

"The owner listed on every property deed is..."

She looked toward the elderly woman.

"...Mrs. Evelyn Carter."

The guests gasped.

Several wealthy businessmen who had been chatting moments earlier suddenly stood up.

One by one...

They walked toward Evelyn.

Each greeted her with a respectful handshake.

"Good afternoon, Mrs. Carter."

"It's an honor to see you again."

The bride's face turned pale.

She recognized every one of them.

They were CEOs.

Investors.

People who had never once acknowledged her during the engagement party.

Yet now...

They treated the woman she had slapped with genuine respect.

"I don't understand," the bride whispered.

"You dress like..."

She couldn't finish the sentence.

Evelyn smiled softly.

"I grew up with nothing."

"I promised myself that if I ever became wealthy..."

"...I would never let money decide how I treated people."

She looked down at her simple floral dress.

"I wear clothes that make me comfortable."

"Not clothes that impress strangers."

The room fell silent.

The bride felt hundreds of eyes fixed on her.

Desperate to save herself, she grabbed the microphone.

"Everyone is overreacting!"

"I didn't know who she was."

"I thought she was just..."

She hesitated.

"...a poor relative."

The groom shook his head.

"And if she had been?"

The bride had no answer.

He stepped closer.

"My mother never hid her wealth."

"She hid it from you."

The bride frowned.

"What does that mean?"

He reached into his jacket and removed a small envelope.

"It's the report from the private investigator I hired six months ago."

The guests exchanged confused looks.

"I wanted to know whether you loved me..."

"...or my family's money."

The bride's breathing quickened.

"You investigated me?"

"No."

"I tested you."

He looked around the ballroom.

"For the last six months..."

"My mother deliberately drove an old car."

"Wore inexpensive clothes."

"And visited us without security."

"Every single time..."

"You ignored her."

"You refused to let her sit with us."

"You even told restaurant staff she was your housekeeper."

A stunned silence filled the hall.

The bride slowly backed away.

"That's not true."

The groom opened the investigator's report.

Inside were dozens of photographs.

Restaurant security footage.

Hotel lobby recordings.

Messages.

Voice recordings.

One recording echoed through the ballroom speakers.

The bride's own voice.

"Once we're married, I'll make sure his poor mother never embarrasses us again."

Another clip followed.

"Old women like her belong in nursing homes, not luxury events."

The bride covered her mouth.

"No..."

"I never meant—"

"You meant every word," the groom interrupted.

Tears filled her eyes.

Guests who had once admired her now looked away in disgust.

Even her own bridesmaids quietly stepped back.

The wedding planner approached the groom.

"Sir..."

"What would you like us to do with the reception?"

He smiled gently at his mother.

"Nothing should go to waste."

He took Evelyn's hand.

"Invite every employee."

"The cooks."

"The cleaners."

"The drivers."

"The gardeners."

"Every person who helped build today."

"If anyone deserves this celebration..."

"...it's them."

Thunderous applause filled the ballroom.

The bride stood alone in the center of the room.

No one defended her.

No one comforted her.

Then the massive entrance doors slowly opened.

A black limousine arrived outside.

A sharply dressed man stepped inside holding a leather briefcase.

The moment Evelyn saw him...

Her smile disappeared.

The lawyer looked directly at the bride.

Then he quietly announced,

"Mrs. Carter..."

"I've brought the DNA test results you requested before the wedding."

The applause stopped instantly.

The groom turned around slowly.

"DNA test?"

The lawyer nodded.

May you like

"It concerns the bride... and a secret she's been hiding for nearly twenty-five years."

The bride's face lost every trace of color.
