Chapter 4: The Bride’s Lie

Chapter 4: The Bride’s Lie
By morning, the wedding video had been seen by millions.
Not the professional footage.
That disappeared first.
Richard Ashford’s attorneys moved quickly, contacting media outlets, threatening lawsuits, demanding privacy, and claiming that “a deeply disturbed child had been exploited by unknown parties to disrupt a private family ceremony.”
But guests had recorded everything.
Victoria slapping Lily.
Michael recognizing the locket.
Lily saying, My mommy is alive.
Michael turning to Victoria and saying, You lied to me.
Those clips spread faster than any legal team could bury them.
The headlines were brutal.
GROOM’S WEDDING STOPPED BY CHILD WITH DEAD WIFE’S LOCKET
BRIDE ACCUSED OF HIDING TRUTH ABOUT EX-WIFE
LITTLE GIRL CLAIMS “DEAD” WOMAN IS ALIVE
ASHFORD FAMILY UNDER INVESTIGATION AFTER WEDDING SCANDAL
Michael did not care about the headlines.
He cared about finding Anna.
He took Lily to his penthouse that night under police protection. She refused to sleep unless the locket stayed in her hand. Michael let her keep it. He slept in a chair outside the guest room with the door open because every time she woke, she cried for her mother.
At six in the morning, his attorney, Marcus Wren, arrived with two private investigators and a stack of documents Michael had not looked at in years.
Anna’s disappearance file.
Seeing it again felt like opening a coffin.
Marcus placed the folder on the table.
“We start from the beginning,” he said.
Michael sat across from him, exhausted, unshaven, still wearing the shirt from beneath his tuxedo.
“Then start with Richard.”
Marcus nodded. “The Ashfords had financial motive.”
Michael looked up.
“What motive?”
Marcus slid a document forward. “Five years ago, Sterling Development was preparing to pull out of a resort deal with Ashford Holdings. Anna discovered irregularities in environmental reports tied to that deal.”
Michael remembered Anna being angry that week.
She had said Richard was hiding land contamination near one of the proposed developments. Michael had dismissed it as business pressure. Anna had gone to the gala because she wanted to confront someone from the foundation’s board.
“She told me she had proof,” Michael whispered.
Marcus nodded. “That proof disappeared with her.”
Michael pressed his hands against his face.
“And Victoria?”
“She entered your life as emotional support shortly afterward. Her father’s deal survived because you were too grief-stricken to challenge it.”
Michael felt sick.
Victoria had not comforted him after Anna disappeared.
She had managed him.
The private investigator, a woman named Nadia Cross, spoke next.
“We also found something else. Victoria visited a private women’s clinic two days before Anna vanished.”
Michael frowned. “Why does that matter?”
Nadia placed a copy of a visitor log on the table.
“Anna visited the same clinic that morning.”
Michael’s heart stopped.
“She was pregnant.”
The room became silent.
Marcus nodded slowly.
“The clinic record was sealed. Then altered. Someone changed Anna’s file to remove the pregnancy confirmation.”
Michael stood abruptly.
The chair scraped against the floor.
“She was going to tell me.”
Nadia’s expression softened. “It appears so.”
Michael walked to the window, looking out over the city Anna had once loved.
Five years.
Five years stolen.
A wife.
A daughter.
A life.
Behind him, Lily’s small voice came from the hallway.
“Daddy?”
The word froze him.
He turned.
Lily stood in borrowed pajamas, hair messy, locket around her neck. She looked fragile, but her eyes were Anna’s eyes: direct, searching, brave despite fear.
Michael crouched.
“Yes?”
“Are you mad?”
“No, sweetheart.”
“At Mommy?”
His chest tightened. “Never.”
Lily looked relieved.
“She said you might be mad because she stayed away.”
Michael shook his head. “No. I just want to find her.”
Lily came closer and pulled something from the pocket of her cardigan. It was a small memory card.
Michael stared at it.
“Where did you get that?”
“Mommy sewed it inside my dress,” Lily said. “She said if the locket wasn’t enough, give you this. But only after we were somewhere safe.”
Michael looked at Marcus.
Marcus immediately brought over a laptop.
The memory card contained one video file.
Michael pressed play.
Anna appeared on screen.
Older.
Thinner.
Hair darker and shorter.
But alive.
Michael stopped breathing.
Anna sat in a dimly lit room, speaking quietly.
“Michael, if you are seeing this, Lily found you.”
Her voice broke on their daughter’s name.
“I’m sorry. I wanted to come myself, but if I entered the hotel, Richard’s people would see me. I have been hiding for five years because the night I disappeared, I was taken after I confronted Richard Ashford about the resort documents. Victoria was there. She heard everything. They knew I was pregnant.”
Michael’s hands curled into fists.
Anna continued.
“They kept me long enough to make you believe I was dead. I escaped before Lily was born, but by then they had people watching you, watching the company, watching every old friend I might contact. I thought staying away was the only way to keep Lily alive.”
Tears slid down Michael’s face.
Lily climbed into his lap.
On the screen, Anna leaned closer.
“Victoria was never innocent. She knew I was alive. She knew Lily existed. She helped convince you to stop searching. If she marries you, Richard gains legal access to Sterling assets through the merger clause. You must stop the wedding before the final trust signature. That is why I sent Lily.”
Marcus paused the video.
“The final trust signature,” he said.
Michael looked at him.
“The wedding contract,” Marcus explained. “If you married Victoria and signed the post-ceremony merger certificate, Ashford Holdings would gain emergency voting rights in Sterling Development.”
Michael’s face went cold.
“So this wedding wasn’t just about marrying me.”
“No,” Marcus said. “It was about taking your company.”
Lily whispered, “Where’s Mommy now?”
Michael looked at the frozen image of Anna on the screen.
“I don’t know,” he said.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered immediately.
For three seconds, there was only static.
Then Anna’s voice came through.
“Michael?”
He stood so fast Lily gasped.
“Anna?”
A sob broke through the line.
“I saw the video. You found her.”
“Where are you?”
There was a pause.
Too long.
May you like
Then Anna whispered, “I think they found me too.”
The line went dead.
