Chapter 7: On the Run

David grabbed two go-bags he had packed earlier, stuffed Leo into the back of his Honda, and fled the city. They drove north, deep into the Adirondacks, toward a remote hunting cabin owned by a deceased uncle. It had no electricity, no running water, and, most importantly, no cell reception.

For three days, they lived like hunted animals. David chopped wood in a frantic, manic rhythm, while Leo sat on the porch, staring silently at the tree line.

The isolation gave David time to think, to strategize, but it also let the despair seep in. He had the drive, the evidence that could tear down an empire, but who could he trust? The local police? The FBI? The ledger implicated members of both. He was a high school history teacher playing a deadly game against ghosts.

On the fourth night, the silence of the woods was broken by the crunch of tires on gravel.

David extinguished the kerosene lantern and pushed Leo under the heavy oak bed. He chambered a round in his 9mm, his breathing shallow as he crept toward the window.

A single black SUV sat in the driveway. The headlights cut off. A man stepped out, holding a megaphone.
