CHAPTER 9: THE HOUSE OF CARDS

The image of Richard Langley being led out of the courthouse in handcuffs broke the internet. It was a cinematic downfall. The billionaire titan, stripped of his bespoke suit jacket, his head bowed to avoid the blinding flashes of the paparazzi.

Victor stood on the steps of the courthouse, completely untouched by the feds, but entirely ruined in the eyes of the world. He watched his father get pushed into the back of a black SUV. The empire was gone. The bank accounts were frozen. The properties were being seized for federal restitution.

Victor reached into his pocket. He had exactly forty dollars in cash, a dead cell phone, and the clothes on his back. The irony was suffocating. Six years ago, Elena Carlisle had stood on these exact same steps, holding a folder too large for her hands, stripped of her reputation and her family by the Langleys. Now, Victor was standing in the exact same spot, experiencing the precise, agonizing weight of absolute ruin.

He looked across the plaza. Elena was walking toward a waiting town car. She didn't look back at him. She didn't gloat. She didn't offer a final, triumphant smirk. She simply got into the car and drove away, leaving Victor to face the consequences of a war he hadn't even known he was fighting.

The media frenzy would last for months. The Langley name would become synonymous with greed and corruption. Books would be written. Documentaries would be filmed. But none of them would capture the true terror of what had happened. The terror wasn't that the system was broken. The terror was that Elena Carlisle had learned exactly how to use it.
