Chapter 3: Whispers in the Walls

Weeks passed, and the Brooks mansion became a battlefield of quiet whispers and cold shoulders. Margaret remained loving but was increasingly distracted, often locking herself in her study to manage the family’s sprawling business empire—a burden that had fallen entirely on her since Daniel's passing and her husband's earlier death. This left Claire vulnerable to Victoria's psychological warfare.

Victoria, though officially only a "close family friend" now, was always there. She intercepted Claire’s meals, making snide remarks to the staff about the "freeloader." She orchestrated situations to make Claire look incompetent, once intentionally startling Leo so he would cry incessantly just as Arthur was hosting an important business call in the adjoining room.

Arthur’s suspicion only deepened. He had quietly hired a private investigator to dig into Claire’s past. "People don't just appear out of nowhere, Mother," Arthur warned one evening in the drawing room, unaware that Claire was standing just outside the door. "She’s manipulating your grief. What if she knew Daniel was sick? What if she calculated this whole thing?"

Desperate for a connection to the man she loved, Claire sought refuge in Daniel’s childhood bedroom. Margaret had left it untouched. It was a time capsule of a boy she never knew—trophies, worn-out books, and a guitar gathering dust. One rainy afternoon, while searching for a blanket in the back of his closet, Claire’s hand brushed against a loose floorboard.

Curiosity overcoming her anxiety, she pried the board up. Inside lay a small cedar box. Her breath caught in her throat. She opened it to find a stack of letters, all addressed to her.

Her hands trembled as she broke the seal of the first envelope. It was dated just three months before his death.

My dearest Claire, If you are reading this, I am so sorry. I’m sorry I ran. The doctors gave me a year, maybe less. I couldn't bear to watch you watch me die. I thought leaving without a word would make it easier for you to move on, but the cowardice is eating me alive...

Tears streamed down Claire’s face. He hadn't abandoned her. He was trying to protect her. But as she read the final letter, her sorrow turned to freezing horror.I gave my letters to Victoria to mail to you. She promised she would send them, to explain everything, to make sure you were financially supported. I trust her to do this one last thing for me...

Claire gasped, dropping the letter. Victoria hadn't mailed them. Victoria had kept them hidden, leaving Claire to believe she was abandoned, and leaving Daniel to die thinking Claire simply hadn't responded.
