Chapter 4: The Poisoned Apple

Armed with the letters, Claire prepared to show Margaret the truth. But before she could reach the study, the heavy oak doors swung open. Arthur stood there, his face a mask of fury, holding a thick manila folder. Behind him, Victoria wore a triumphant, venomous smirk.
"Arthur, what's wrong?" Claire asked, instinctively stepping back.
"It's over, Claire," Arthur said, his voice dripping with venom. He threw the folder onto the mahogany coffee table. Photos spilled out—pictures of Claire talking to a strange man, bank statements, and a document labeled 'Confidential Background Check'. "My investigator finally delivered."
Margaret rushed out of the study, her eyes darting between them. "Arthur, what is the meaning of this?"
"She’s a fraud, Mother," Arthur declared, pointing at Claire. "The PI found that she’s heavily in debt. That man in the photos? A known forger. The investigator believes the DNA test was compromised from the start. She’s been setting this up for months to secure Daniel's estate."
"No!" Claire cried, her heart dropping into her stomach. "That's a lie! I have debt from hospital bills because I gave birth alone! The man in the photo is just my landlord in Ohio!"
Victoria stepped forward, placing a comforting hand on Margaret’s shoulder. "Margaret, I know it hurts. We all wanted a piece of Daniel back. But this girl has played us. She saw a grieving mother and took advantage."
"Margaret, please," Claire begged, tears spilling over her cheeks. She reached into her pocket for Daniel's letters, but in the chaos, her hands shook so violently she dropped them.

Arthur kicked the cedar box away. "Pack your bags, Claire. If you are not out of this house in one hour, I am calling the police and having you arrested for fraud."Margaret looked at Claire, her eyes shattered. The hope that had sustained her for weeks evaporated, replaced by a hollow, devastating betrayal. "Just go," Margaret whispered, turning away. "Please, just take the baby and leave."
Claire's world collapsed. She had lost Daniel, and now she was losing the only family her son had left. Sobbing, she ran upstairs, packed Leo's meager belongings, and wrapped him tightly in his blanket. As she walked out the front doors into the pouring rain, Victoria stood by the window, sipping a glass of wine, her victory complete.
