CHAPTER 47 — The Ghost in the Shadows

One month after the Zurich showdown. The Phoenix Alliance loft in Chicago had transformed from a raw brick space into a sprawling, multi-floor high-tech legal intelligence firm. Valeria had used a fraction of her newly acquired capital to retain the finest forensic analysts, former intelligence operatives, and international lawyers money could buy.
Valeria sat in her top-floor executive suite, looking down at the frozen grid of the Chicago skyline. The heavy glass door slid open, and Victor walked in, his expression grayer than usual.
"We have a security anomaly from the federal witness protection grid," Victor said, sliding a encrypted document onto her desk. "Your father, Ernesto... disappeared from his government safehouse in Vermont at midnight."
Valeria didn't look up from her screen. "Was he taken, or did he run?"
"No signs of a struggle. No security breaches detected on the perimeter cameras. Just a single physical letter left on his desk addressed directly to you," Victor handed her a heavy charcoal-gray envelope.
