CHAPTER 2 – THE EVIDENCE SHE NEVER EXPECTED

"I didn't do anything!"

My mother's voice cracked as the sheriff fastened the handcuffs around her wrists.

"This is my house!"

I stared at her.

"No."

"It's mine."

The kitchen fell silent.

The sheriff nodded toward the hallway.

"My deputies are securing the property."

One of them emerged from the master bedroom carrying a locked metal box.

"We found this under the bed."

My mother's eyes widened.

"Don't touch that!"

The deputy placed the box on the dining table.

Inside were dozens of neatly labeled folders.

Each one had my name.

ELIAS – BANK RECORDS.

ELIAS – INSURANCE.

ELIAS – DEPLOYMENT.

The sheriff opened another folder.

Everyone froze.

Life insurance documents.

My signature had supposedly approved a policy worth five million dollars.

Beneficiary:

Sarah Vance.

But something was wrong.

I had never signed those papers.

"I've never seen this before."

The sheriff examined the signature.

"It looks forged."

Another deputy held up several envelopes.

"Sir... these were hidden in the same box."

They were all addressed to me.

Every letter Sarah had written during my deployment.

Not one had been opened.

Sarah gasped.

"I wrote every week."

"I told you about the baby's first heartbeat."

"The ultrasound."

"The gender reveal..."

"I thought you ignored me."

I could barely breathe.

"I never received a single one."

My mother looked away.

"You didn't need distractions."

Sarah broke down crying.

For an entire year...

She believed I had abandoned her.

And I believed she had simply stopped writing.

My mother had stolen twelve months of our lives.

Then the deputy discovered something else.

A small digital voice recorder.

"What is this?"

The sheriff pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then my mother's voice echoed through the speaker.

"If the stress doesn't make her lose the baby..."

A man's voice interrupted.

"Then what?"

"Then we'll finish it another way."

Every person in the room went pale.

Sarah clutched her stomach instinctively.

The unborn baby kicked.

As if sensing the fear surrounding us.

The sheriff stopped the recording.

His expression hardened.

"Ma'am..."

"This is no longer attempted coercion."

"This is conspiracy to commit murder."

My mother's knees nearly gave out.

"You don't understand!"

"I was protecting my son!"

"From what?" I asked quietly.

She looked directly at Sarah.

"From her family."

Confusion spread across the room.

"My father..." Sarah whispered.

"What does my father have to do with this?"

My mother laughed.

A slow...

Unsettling laugh.

"You still haven't told him?"

Sarah's face turned ghost white.

"Told me what?"

Before she could answer—

The front door burst open.

A black luxury SUV had pulled into the driveway.

An elderly man in an expensive suit stepped inside, flanked by two bodyguards.

The moment Sarah saw him...

She stopped breathing.

"Dad..."

The man looked straight at me.

Then at my pregnant wife.

Finally...

He turned toward my mother in handcuffs.

His voice was cold.

"So..."

"My ex-business partner finally went too far."

I frowned.

"Business partner?"

The old man nodded.

Then he delivered a sentence that made everyone in the room question everything they thought they knew.

"Elias..."

May you like

"You don't know who your wife really is."

"And your mother has been hiding the truth since the day you were born."
