CHAPTER 3 – THE SECRET OF MY FATHER

The room went completely silent.
I looked from Sarah...
...to the man standing in the doorway.
"What truth?"
The elderly man removed his gloves with deliberate calm.
"My name is Richard Hale."
"I founded Hale Defense Technologies."
The name hit me immediately.
It was one of the country's largest military contractors.
He looked at my mother with unmistakable disgust.
"You've been running from the truth for thirty-one years, Eleanor."
My mother lowered her head.
"Don't."
"It's too late."
Richard turned back to me.
"Your father wasn't the man who raised you."
My heartbeat stopped.
"What?"
"The man you called Dad loved you."
"He raised you as his own."
"But biologically..."
Richard swallowed hard.
"...you're my son."
The kitchen erupted.
Sarah covered her mouth in shock.
The sheriff exchanged stunned glances with his deputies.
I couldn't process what I had just heard.
"You're lying."
"I wish I were."
Richard slowly removed an old photograph from his wallet.
It showed him as a young man.
Standing beside...
My mother.
She was smiling.
And she was pregnant.
The date on the back of the picture was exactly nine months before I was born.
My hands trembled.
My mother finally spoke.
"I never wanted you to know."
"You chose another woman," she snapped at Richard.
"You abandoned us."
Richard's eyes filled with regret.
"No."
"You disappeared."
"I searched for you for years."
"I hired investigators."
"I never stopped looking."
He reached into his briefcase and placed dozens of documents on the table.
Private investigator reports.
Court filings.
Returned letters.
Everything proved he had spent decades trying to find us.
My mother had hidden every piece of it.
I felt my world collapsing.
The woman I trusted most had stolen an entire lifetime.
But she wasn't finished.
She suddenly looked at Sarah with burning hatred.
"None of this changes anything."
"She married you for money."
Sarah stared at her in disbelief.
"I didn't even know Richard was my father until I was eighteen."
Richard nodded.
"It's true."
"My wife and I adopted Sarah after my sister died."
I looked at Sarah.
"So..."
"We're not related."
She shook her head through tears.
"No."
"Not in any way."
Relief washed over me.
Then Richard pulled out one final envelope.
"I hoped I'd never need this."
Inside...
Was a recent will.
Signed only three months earlier.
He handed it to me.
"I have terminal heart disease."
The words struck harder than any explosion I'd heard overseas.
"I don't have much time."
"I asked Eleanor to tell you the truth."
"Instead..."
He looked toward the handcuffed woman.
"...she tried to destroy your family."
My mother suddenly screamed.
"I was protecting him!"
"Your money would ruin his life!"
Richard calmly answered,
"No."
"You wanted it for yourself."
The sheriff unfolded another document from the folder.
A transfer agreement.
It listed my mother as the future controller of Richard's entire estate...
Only if both Sarah and our unborn child were no longer legal heirs.
The room fell silent.
Every motive suddenly made perfect sense.
The fake divorce.
The threats.
The burning iron.
It had never been about protecting me.
It had been about eliminating everyone standing between my mother...
...and nearly a billion dollars.
The sheriff slowly folded the document.
"Eleanor Vance..."
"You are under arrest for fraud, forgery, attempted murder, criminal conspiracy, and evidence tampering."
As deputies led her toward the front door...
She turned back one final time.
She looked directly at me.
"I did it because I loved you."
I met her eyes.
For the first time...
I felt nothing.
"No."
"You did it because you loved yourself."
The front door closed behind her.
The house became silent.
But just as Sarah leaned against me in relief...
She suddenly grabbed her stomach.
Her face twisted in pain.
"Elias..."
"My water just broke."
Everyone looked down.
A pool of water spread across the kitchen floor.
The baby was coming.
May you like
Three weeks early.
And the nearest hospital was over forty minutes away.
