Part 3: The Promise Buried Beneath the Fire

Christian's heartbeat thundered inside his chest.
For several long seconds, he couldn't hear the orchestra.
He couldn't hear the whispers spreading through the ballroom.
He couldn't even hear his own breathing.
His entire world had narrowed to one impossible sentence.
"My father is still alive."
The little boy clung tightly to him, trembling.
Christian slowly pulled back just enough to look into the child's frightened eyes.
"What did you say?"
The boy swallowed hard.
"My daddy said... only you would believe me."
Christian's hands began shaking.
Scott Miller...
Alive?
For ten years, government officials had declared the decorated Army Ranger dead after the Black Ridge humanitarian operation. Christian had attended the memorial service. He had stood beside Scott's folded flag. He had watched soldiers salute an empty coffin.
None of it made sense.
"Where is your father?"
The boy looked over his shoulder.
Toward the ballroom entrance.
His voice dropped into another whisper.
"They're watching."
Christian's instincts exploded into action.
Years before becoming one of America's youngest billionaires, he had survived a war zone because Scott had taught him one lesson:
Never ignore a frightened child's eyes.
Christian slowly stood, lifting the boy into his arms.
His private security chief, Marcus Hale, immediately stepped forward.
"Lock every entrance."
Marcus didn't ask questions.
Within seconds, discreet agents wearing black suits spread throughout the ballroom, quietly sealing every exit without alarming the guests.
Confused murmurs filled the room.
Several politicians protested.
"What's going on?"
Christian ignored them.
Instead, he carried the boy toward a quieter corner of the ballroom.
"My name's Christian."
"I know."
"What's yours?"
"Ethan."
"How old are you?"
"I'm seven."
Christian froze.
Seven years old.
Scott had supposedly died...
Ten years ago.
Which meant...
Scott had survived the explosion.
He had built a family.
He had hidden for years.
"Ethan..."
"Where's your mother?"
The little boy lowered his eyes.
"They took her."
Christian felt his stomach tighten.
"Who?"
"The Crows."
The words struck him harder than any bullet.
Only three people had ever known about The Crows.
Scott.
Christian.
And the intelligence officer who disappeared after the Black Ridge mission.
The Crows weren't ordinary criminals.
They were an underground organization built from corrupt military contractors, arms traffickers, and intelligence brokers.
Officially...
They didn't exist.
Unofficially...
They had started wars, erased witnesses, and eliminated anyone carrying evidence against them.
Scott had once spent three years infiltrating their network.
If he was still alive...
Then he was carrying something far more valuable than his own life.
Christian suddenly understood why Ethan had arrived bleeding.
This wasn't an accident.
The boy had escaped.
Before Christian could ask another question...
Marcus touched the earpiece hidden beneath his collar.
His face changed instantly.
"Sir..."
"We have a problem."
Christian looked up.
"What is it?"
Marcus spoke quietly.
"We've identified three men carrying forged security credentials."
"They're inside the hotel."
Christian's expression hardened.
"They're not guests."
Marcus nodded.
"They're moving toward this ballroom."
Ethan buried his face against Christian's shoulder.
"They found me..."
Christian wrapped one arm protectively around the child.
"No."
"They found me."
He looked toward Marcus.
"Evacuate every civilian."
"Quietly."
Marcus hesitated.
"And you?"
Christian's eyes never left the ballroom doors.
"They didn't come for Ethan."
"They came for the promise Scott trusted me to keep."
At that exact moment...
The ballroom lights suddenly went out.
Complete darkness swallowed the room.
Then...
May you like
A single gunshot echoed through the hotel.
