Chapter 1: The Blinking Light

The silence in the Whitmore Hotel ballroom shattered the moment the distant wail of sirens pierced the Chicago night.
Preston’s eyes darted from the red, steadily blinking light of the CCTV camera back to Evelyn. The color drained from his face, his arrogant sneer replaced by the panicked realization of a man who suddenly knew he wasn't invincible.
"Call an ambulance!" Evelyn screamed, her voice tearing through the frozen crowd. She pressed a linen napkin against Sophie's forehead, the white fabric blooming crimson. Sophie whimpered, her small fingers clutching Evelyn's dress like a lifeline.
Margaret, ever the matriarch, stepped forward, her champagne gown rustling. "Preston, go to the bridal suite. Now," she ordered, her voice a whip crack of authority. She turned to the crowd, flashing a tight, practiced smile. "A tragic accident, everyone. Please, return to the lounge."
Richard pulled his phone from his tuxedo pocket, dialing a number Evelyn knew all too well—the family’s fixer. "Get hotel security on the line," Richard muttered into the receiver. "Wipe the servers."
Evelyn’s heart hammered against her ribs. She couldn't let them erase the truth. As paramedics burst through the oak double doors, Evelyn grabbed her titanium iPhone with her bloodstained hand. She didn't call the police; she called Marcus, the hotel's night manager and a man whose daughter Evelyn had once tutored for free.
"Marcus," Evelyn whispered fiercely as the EMTs lifted Sophie onto a stretcher. "Camera four. The ballroom. Download the last ten minutes to an encrypted drive before the Whitmores get to the control room."

"Consider it done, Evie," Marcus replied, his voice tense.
As the ambulance doors slammed shut, Evelyn looked out the back window. Preston was watching from the grand staircase, pale and trembling. The game had changed, and he knew it.
