Chapter 2: The Price of Silence

The rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor was the only sound in Sophie’s hospital room. She was asleep, a stark white bandage wrapping her head, a severe concussion but, thankfully, no permanent brain damage.
Evelyn sat by the bed, her navy elegant dress ruined, her eyes bloodshot but fiercely awake.
The door clicked open. Richard stepped in, his black tuxedo swapped for a bespoke charcoal day-suit. He looked entirely out of place in the sterile, fluorescent-lit room. He didn't look at Sophie. He walked straight to the small table and placed a heavy, cream-colored envelope on it.
"Two million dollars," Richard said, his voice as cold as marble. "Tax-free. And a full scholarship for the girl to any boarding school in Switzerland."
Evelyn didn't blink. "And in exchange?"
"You sign a non-disclosure agreement. You state that the sign fell off the easel by accident. You drop this ridiculous narrative of assault," Richard stated, adjusting his cuffs. "Preston has a temper, yes. But the Bride’s diamond tennis bracelet is missing. Your daughter was seen near the bridal suite. The narrative of a desperate single mother and a thieving child will play very well in the press if you force us to go to trial, Evelyn."
Evelyn looked at the envelope. She knew the Whitmore playbook: deny, destroy, outspend.
"Take the money, Evelyn. We own the police commissioner. The hotel footage was corrupted during a server reboot. You have nothing," Richard said, a patronizing smile touching his lips.
Evelyn reached out and pulled the envelope toward her. Richard’s smile widened. He turned to leave, satisfied that everyone had a price.

What Richard didn't know was that Evelyn’s phone, sitting right beside the envelope, was recording every word. And the USB drive Marcus had slipped her an hour ago was sitting safely inside her purse.
"You should have checked your own family before you came for mine," Evelyn thought, staring at his retreating back.
