CHAPTER 2 — The Truth Inside the Envelope

CHAPTER 2 — The Truth Inside the Envelope
Officer Hernandez collected the envelope.
Richard laughed nervously.
"Open it."
The officer unfolded the papers.
His expression changed.
"This isn't money."
Brandon grabbed for it.
"What is it?"
Melissa answered first.
"Copies."
"Copies of what?"
"My client's new trust agreement."
Mom blinked.
"What trust?"
Melissa looked directly at Richard.
"The trust established by Emily's late grandmother."
The room froze.
Richard stared.
"That's impossible."
Melissa pulled another folder from her briefcase.
"Your mother left Emily more than six hundred thousand dollars."
Brandon's jaw dropped.
"You lied!"
"No."
Melissa shook her head.
"She specifically instructed that the inheritance remain hidden until Emily was diagnosed with a life-threatening illness—or until she turned thirty."
Emily looked at her parents.
"You knew."
Neither of them spoke.
Melissa continued.
"Your grandmother also left a notarized letter explaining exactly why."
She handed it to Officer Hernandez.
The first sentence said everything.
"If my son ever learns about this money, he will spend it on Brandon before he saves Emily."
