CHAPTER 3 — Years of Secrets

CHAPTER 3 — Years of Secrets

The police requested separate statements.

While they questioned Richard and Brandon, Melissa handed me another envelope.

"This one is real."

Inside were photographs.

Hospital bills.

School records.

Old bank statements.

Every birthday check from Grandma.

Every college fund withdrawal.

Every insurance payment.

Every dollar that had disappeared.

Melissa sighed.

"Your grandmother hired a private investigator."

I turned another page.

Dad had emptied my education account.

To buy Brandon his first sports car.

Mom had forged my signature.

Twice.

Brandon had stolen my pain medication after my first chemotherapy treatment.

I looked up.

"How long have you known?"

Melissa answered softly.

"For almost fifteen years."

"And Grandma?"

"She knew long before she died."

Tears blurred my vision.

May you like

"She tried to protect you."

Outside the living room, I heard handcuffs click.
