Chapter 15 - THE HEARING HE WANTED PRIVATE

Dean’s probation review hearing was closed to cameras because the evidence involved minors.

He asked the judge for leniency.

His attorney argued that Dean had voluntarily revealed the locker and cooperated with the renewed investigation. He described Dean as a father confronting the painful realization that loyalty had blinded him.

The prosecutor presented the binder, the recordings and Dean’s financial payments.

“This was not blindness,” she said. “It was administration.”

Emma chose not to attend in person.

She recorded a statement from Naomi’s office.

The court allowed only audio.

I sat behind the prosecutor when my daughter’s voice entered the courtroom.

“I don’t want Dean punished because I’m angry,” she said. “I want the court to understand that every time he hid something, I had to live inside the lie he created.”

Dean lowered his head.

Emma continued.

“He called protecting Mason a family decision. I was family too, until protecting me became inconvenient.”

The courtroom remained completely still.

“I don’t need Dean to suffer the way I suffered. I need him to stop receiving credit for telling the truth after other people found it.”

Dean began to cry.

A year earlier, the sight would have weakened me.

Now I understood that tears could be real without changing what a person deserved.

The judge revoked Dean’s suspended sentence and ordered him to serve eighteen months in state custody, followed by extended probation. His cooperation would be considered in any future proceedings, but it did not erase the years of concealment.

Laura was charged with evidence tampering, witness intimidation and financial coercion related to the earlier complaints.

Pastor Miles resigned before charges were announced.

Outside the courthouse, Laura pushed through the reporters toward me.

“You destroyed three generations of one family,” she said.

“No.”

I looked at Rachel and Tessa standing beside Naomi.

“Your family spent three generations teaching girls to disappear.”

Laura’s expression changed.

She stepped closer, but a deputy blocked her.

Then she smiled at me.

“You still think Dean found that locker key by accident?”

My stomach tightened.

“What are you talking about?”

“Ask Emma who mailed his letter.”

Dean had been in custody when the envelope arrived.

The postmark came from our neighborhood.
