Chapter 6 - THE FATHER SHE FACED FROM ANOTHER ROOM

The confrontation happened through two screens and three attorneys.
Maya sat in a child-advocacy center with Denise, a prosecutor, and me. Robert and Colin appeared separately from their lawyers’ offices. Neither was permitted to speak directly to Maya without questions being controlled.
Colin denied using force.
He said Maya had pursued him and lied about her age to strangers online, though he had lived in our home and attended her fifteenth-birthday dinner.
The prosecutor displayed his messages one at a time.
Mature for your age.
Delete this.
Dad will fix it.
Colin stopped answering.
Then Robert appeared.
He admitted sending Colin away but claimed he had acted to keep the brothers separated until he understood what happened.
Maya looked at the screen.
“You took my phone,” she said. “You made me sit in the garage while you called him.”
Robert’s expression shifted.
“I was scared.”
“You told me Mom would hate me.”
“I said she might not understand.”
“You said she’d pick you because she needed the house.”
I felt the words like a hand against my throat.
Robert stared at me instead of Maya.
“I didn’t know what else to do.”
“You could’ve taken her to a doctor,” I said.
“You could’ve reported it.”
“You could’ve believed that Colin’s future was not worth more than her safety.”
He struck the desk with his palm.
“You think prison fixes her? You think losing her brother and father fixes anything?”
“No,” Maya said.
Her voice was quiet enough that everyone leaned toward the speakers.
“But you don’t get to call yourself my father to protect him and then call me a liar to protect yourself.”
Robert looked away.
The prosecutor then disclosed the corroborating evidence: Colin’s messages, Robert’s payments, altered payroll records, the deleted school voicemail, the attorney’s written warning, and the proposal asking me to deny interference with medical care.
Colin’s lawyer requested a break.
Robert’s did the same.
Before his screen went dark, Robert asked whether Maya wanted him to lose everything.
She held my hand but answered for herself.
“I wanted you to come upstairs when I cried.”
The connection ended.
Within the week, Colin was extradited to Idaho to face charges involving sexual abuse of a minor and witness intimidation. Robert was charged separately with evidence tampering, obstruction, and child endangerment.

The criminal cases would take months.
But the family version of the truth could no longer be controlled at our dinner table.
