Chapter 4 - The Boardroom SiegeThe glass-and-steel skyscraper of Whitaker Medical Holdings towered forty stories over the financial district. On the top floor, inside the grand boardroom, tension was thick enough to cut with a knife.

Arthur Sterling, a sharp-featured man in his late sixties with silver hair and a ruthless reputation, sat at the head of the mahogany conference table. Surrounding him were ten executive board members, all whispering nervously as live news feeds streamed reports of the sudden volatility in the company’s stock.

"Order!" Sterling barked, slamming his palm on the table. The boardroom fell silent. "We are here to address an unprecedented crisis. Reed Whitaker has been arrested for attempted murder and grand larceny. The press is circling like vultures. To save this company from total collapse, we must execute Bylaw 14-B immediately."

A junior board member raised his hand hesitantly. "Arthur, Bylaw 14-B requires proof that the majority shareholder—Maren Whitaker—is medically incapacitated from making corporate decisions."

"Maren Whitaker suffered a severe anaphylactic brain hypoxia event last night," Sterling lied smoothly, shuffling a set of forged medical documents prepared by his paid doctors. "She is currently in an intensive care unit, unfit to govern. As Vice Chairman, I am assuming temporary voting control over her forty-two percent share block to stabilize the company and authorize a buyout."

Before any board member could vote, the heavy double doors of the boardroom burst open.

Two security guards tried to intervene, but Croft’s elite security team swiftly moved them aside.

Through the doorway rode Maren Whitaker, looking immaculate in a tailored midnight-blue suit, her dark hair pulled back into a sleek, professional ponytail. And walking right beside her, holding a black leather briefcase, was Eleanor Whitaker.

Gasps echoed throughout the room. Two board members stood up so fast their chairs fell backward.

"What is the meaning of this?" Sterling demanded, standing up, though his hands visible shook as his eyes locked onto Eleanor. "Eleanor? That... that’s impossible. You died fifteen years ago!"

"Reports of my death were greatly exaggerated, Arthur," Eleanor said, her voice echoing with commanding authority as she stepped up to the head of the table. "Mainly by you and the corrupt pilots you bribed to sabotage my aircraft."

"This is insane!" Sterling shouted, turning to the security guards. "Escort these trespassers out! This is a private executive session!"

"I own forty-two percent of this corporation, Mr. Sterling," Maren said, her voice slicing through the chaos. "And my mother holds an additional fifteen percent in a private trust that was never dissolved because her death certificate was never legally finalized. Together, we hold fifty-seven percent of Whitaker Medical Holdings. You don't have the authority to order us out. We have the authority to fire you."

Maren opened a folder on her lap and slid a stack of documents down the long mahogany table.

"These are certified bank logs, encrypted emails, and wire transfer receipts recovered from Reed Whitaker’s private server," Maren announced to the stunned board members. "They detail twenty-four months of illegal asset stripping, unauthorized human trials in offshore subsidiaries, and a direct plot to assassinate me to clear the way for a hostile takeover by Sterling’s offshore shell corporation, Apex Global."

The board members frantically grabbed the pages, reading through the overwhelming evidence. Murmurs of fury and shock rippled across the table.

"This is all fabricated!" Sterling yelled, his face flushing crimson. "She's insane! She was poisoned last night! She’s hallucinating!"

"The only thing poisoned was my salmon, Arthur," Maren retorted coldly. "And the poison was provided by a laboratory owned by Apex Global—a laboratory registered directly under your personal tax ID."

Sterling froze. He looked around the table, reading the sudden horror and hostility on the faces of the board members who had supported him just minutes ago. He reached for his phone, but Eleanor stepped forward and placed her hand over his.

"Don't bother calling your legal team, Arthur," Eleanor said softly, leaning down so only he could hear. "Federal agents are waiting in the lobby right now with a warrant for your arrest under the RICO Act. Your private jet in Teterboro has already been grounded."

Outside the glass windows of the boardroom, the distant wail of federal law enforcement sirens began to rise from the streets below.

Sterling slowly sank back into his leather chair, his eyes wide and hollow, realizing that a fifteen-year empire of lies, murder, and greed had collapsed in less than fifteen minutes.

Maren tapped her microphone, addressing the remaining board members. "Effective immediately, Arthur Sterling is removed as Vice Chairman and stripped of all executive authority. I am assuming full duties as Chief Executive Officer of Whitaker Medical Holdings."

She looked at each board member in turn. "Any member of this board who wishes to cooperate with the federal investigation will be given legal counsel. Anyone who attempts to cover up Sterling's crimes will share his cell."

Not a single board member raised a word of protest.

As federal agents entered the boardroom and placed heavy metal handcuffs on Arthur Sterling, Maren leaned back in her wheelchair, taking her first deep, clear breath in days. The external monsters were finally being dragged into the dark.

But as Sterling was led away, he turned his head toward Maren and hissed a final, chilling warning: "You think you've won, Maren? Check on your sister. She knows where the real bodies are buried."
