Chapter 9 - Letters from the DarkMaren opened the envelope beneath the soft glow of the garden lantern. Inside was a handwritten letter from Celeste on plain yellow notebook paper.

Maren,
I don't expect you to write back, and I know I don't deserve your forgiveness. Sitting in this cell, watching the days pass, I am forced to look at the monster I allowed myself to become.
I was consumed by envy for so long that I couldn't see the sister who loved me, protected me, and gave me every opportunity to build a good life. Reed fed my darkness, but I was the one who chose to step into it. I take full responsibility for my crimes.
I read in the news that you walked again. I cried for three hours when I saw the picture of you standing at the conference. You look so strong, Maren. So much like Dad and Mom.
Thank you for saving my life by offering that plea deal. I will spend every day of my sentence trying to become a person worthy of the Whitaker name.
With all the love I failed to show you, Celeste
Maren folded the letter carefully and placed it back in her coat pocket. A soft, gentle peace settled in her heart. She knew the wounds of Celeste's betrayal would take time to fully heal, but for the first time, the pain was no longer an open sore—it was a fading scar.
Eleanor walked down the garden path, wrapping a soft cashmere shawl around Maren’s shoulders.
"Are you alright, sweetheart?" Eleanor asked, sitting beside her on the stone bench.
"I am, Mother," Maren said, leaning her head on Eleanor’s shoulder. "For the first time in my life, I truly am."
"What was in the letter?" Eleanor asked gently.
"Remorse," Maren replied quietly. "And hope. Maybe one day, years from now, when Celeste finishes her sentence, we can rebuild something from the ashes."
May you like
Eleanor smiled softly, putting her arm around Maren. "Your heart was always your greatest strength, Maren. Reed and Sterling thought your kindness was a weakness they could exploit. They never understood that your kindness is what made you invincible."
The two women sat together beneath the starry summer sky, watching the cool water of the koi pond ripple in the night breeze. The dark nightmare that had begun with a single bite of poisoned salmon was finally over. The monsters were gone, the secrets were brought into the light, and a new morning had arrived.
