CHAPTER 13 – THE PRICE OF POWER

CHAPTER 13 – THE PRICE OF POWER

Three weeks later, Khloe left the hospital.

Their son remained in neonatal care but was growing stronger.

They named him Daniel William Thorne, after both grandfathers.

The media waited outside, but Marcus arranged a private exit.

Khloe returned to a secure apartment owned by her uncle rather than the Thorne penthouse.

Marcus did not argue.

Their marriage existed legally.

Emotionally, it remained suspended.

Federal investigations spread across several states.

Victor Rossi was denied bail.

Isabella faced enough charges to spend decades in prison.

Eleanor received limited immunity in exchange for cooperating, but she resigned from every Thorne position.

Marcus visited her once.

She lived alone in a smaller family residence.

No staff.

No security team.

No board meetings.

“You came to forgive me?” she asked.

“No.”

Eleanor nodded.

“I understand.”

“I came to ask why Father stayed married to you.”

The question surprised her.

“Because he loved me.”

“Did you love him?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t you trust him?”

Eleanor looked toward the window.

“Because I was afraid love would make me powerless.”

Marcus thought of Khloe.

“And did control make you powerful?”

“No.”

Her voice broke.

“It made me alone.”

Marcus left without another word.

At Thorne Group, Khloe established an independent ethics board.

Employee pension funds were restored using recovered Rossi assets.

Executives connected to the conspiracy were removed.

Khloe refused a salary.

She refused a private office.

She attended meetings by video while caring for Daniel.

The board quickly learned that she was not decorative.

She read every document.

Questioned every assumption.

Trusted no tradition merely because it was old.

Marcus watched her rebuild the company his family had nearly destroyed.

He admired her.

But admiration was not forgiveness.

One evening, he visited the neonatal unit.

Khloe sat beside Daniel’s incubator.

Marcus remained near the door.

“The doctor says he may come home next week.”

“I heard.”

She looked at him.

“You can come closer.”

He approached.

Daniel’s fingers curled around Khloe’s smallest finger.

Marcus smiled faintly.

“He is strong.”

“He had to be.”

Silence settled between them.

Marcus took a folded document from his jacket.

“What is that?” Khloe asked.

“Transfer of my personal voting shares.”

“To whom?”

“To the employee trust.”

Khloe stared at him.

“You’re giving away control?”

“I’m giving away the weapon my family used against itself.”

“You don’t need to prove anything with money.”

“I know.”

“Then why do it?”

“Because it is right.”

She studied him for a long moment.

“That sounds like something your father wanted you to understand.”

“It took me too long.”

Khloe looked back at their son.

“Change is not one dramatic sacrifice.”

“I know.”

“It is what you do every day after everyone stops watching.”

“I know.”

She finally looked at him again.

“You keep saying that.”

“Because I’m listening now.”

For the first time since the hospital suite, Khloe’s expression softened.

Only slightly.

But Marcus noticed.

A nurse entered holding an envelope.

“This was delivered for Mrs. Thorne.”

There was no sender’s name.

Inside was a photograph.

It showed Daniel Grant—Khloe’s father—standing beside William Thorne.

Between them stood a third man.

A younger Adrian.

On the back, someone had written:

The archive exposed the thieves.

It did not expose the traitor.

May you like

Khloe looked at her uncle.

Adrian’s face went pale.
