Part 3: My Father's Greatest Enemy Finally Revealed Himself

The moment Chloe whispered Victor Blackwell's name, every ounce of color drained from her face.

She looked less like a woman caught in a lie and more like someone who had just seen death arrive.

Outside, the engines of three black SUVs continued to idle.

Six men in tactical gear spread across the front lawn with military precision.

None of them looked nervous.

None of them looked rushed.

They moved like men who had done this many times before.

Andrew stepped in front of me almost instinctively.

It was the first protective thing he had done all night.

I didn't know whether to trust the gesture.

I only knew my baby kicked softly beneath my hand, reminding me that I had someone else to protect.

The front gate crashed open.

Seconds later, another convoy raced through the entrance.

This one was larger.

Much larger.

Black luxury sedans.

Armored vehicles.

More than twenty security officers wearing the silver crest of Carter Global Security.

At the center of the convoy was one familiar car.

My father's.

The rear door opened.

Richard Carter stepped out without saying a word.

He didn't hurry.

He didn't panic.

He simply adjusted the cuff of his suit and looked toward the house with the cold expression that had terrified billionaires and politicians alike for decades.

Victor Blackwell smiled.

"So," he called across the driveway, "the king finally came himself."

My father answered without changing expression.

"I don't send employees to clean up family matters."

The two men stared at one another across the broken driveway.

For a moment, the world felt perfectly still.

Then I realized something.

My father already knew Victor.

Not just knew him.

Hated him.

Richard slowly walked toward the house.

Victor did the same.

Neither man's security team moved.

It was as though they understood an invisible rule.

This conversation belonged only to them.

Inside the living room, Andrew looked completely confused.

"You know him?" he asked me.

I shook my head.

"I've never heard his name."

My father stopped just outside the shattered doorway.

"You've heard stories," he said without looking at me.

"You simply never knew they were about him."

Victor chuckled.

"You should tell your daughter the truth, Richard."

My father's eyes hardened.

"There is nothing she needs to hear from you."

"Oh, I disagree."

Victor folded his hands behind his back.

"Especially about what happened twenty-five years ago."

My father's jaw tightened.

That single reaction frightened me more than anything else.

Richard Carter never showed emotion.

Never.

Yet Victor had found the one subject capable of reaching him.

I stepped forward.

"Dad..."

He looked at me.

"I'm sorry."

Those two words stunned me.

In thirty years of life, I had heard my father apologize only once.

It had been at my mother's funeral.

"What are you talking about?"

He took a slow breath.

"I should have told you long ago."

Victor laughed loudly.

"Now this is becoming interesting."

My father ignored him.

"When your mother was alive, Carter Industries wasn't the company people know today."

"It was much smaller."

"We had one partner."

"Victor?"

Richard nodded.

"He was brilliant."

"He was ambitious."

"And he believed the world belonged to people willing to take it."

Victor smiled proudly.

"I still do."

My father continued.

"We built everything together."

"For almost ten years."

"So what happened?"

Neither man answered immediately.

Finally Victor spoke.

"Your father betrayed me."

Richard's voice became ice.

"I stopped you."

Victor laughed again.

"You exposed me."

"You were stealing pension funds."

"You ruined thousands of families."

"I was creating opportunity."

"You were committing fraud."

Victor shrugged.

"History is written by whoever wins."

Richard stared directly into his eyes.

"No."

"History remembers monsters."

The smile disappeared from Victor's face.

"There it is."

"The righteous Richard Carter."

"The saint."

He suddenly pointed directly at me.

"Did you tell her who really paid the price?"

My father remained silent.

Victor answered for him.

"Your mother."

Every muscle in my body froze.

"My mother?"

Richard closed his eyes briefly.

Twenty-five years earlier...

The authorities had prepared to arrest Victor.

The evidence was overwhelming.

My father had gathered every document himself.

But the night before the arrest...

Someone planted a bomb beneath my parents' car.

My mother died instantly.

My father survived.

Victor was never convicted.

The evidence disappeared.

Witnesses vanished.

Cases collapsed.

And Victor built an empire overseas before quietly returning years later under a different network of companies.

"You killed my mother."

Victor tilted his head.

"Can you prove it?"

My father's security team visibly tensed.

Victor's men lifted their weapons slightly.

One wrong move would turn the driveway into a battlefield.

Inside, Chloe was sobbing uncontrollably.

"I didn't know..."

Victor looked at her with absolute contempt.

"You weren't hired to know."

She flinched.

"I did everything you asked."

"You failed."

"I tried."

"You became emotional."

He sounded almost disappointed.

"Professional people don't become attached."

Andrew suddenly stepped forward.

"You used both of us."

Victor looked amused.

"You were surprisingly easy."

Andrew clenched his fists.

"You destroyed my marriage."

Victor laughed.

"No."

"You destroyed it yourself."

The words landed like a hammer.

Andrew couldn't deny them.

No one forced him to cheat.

No one forced him to lie.

He had made those choices.

Victor had simply provided temptation.

Andrew slowly turned toward me.

Tears filled his eyes.

"Emily..."

"I know saying sorry means nothing."

He swallowed hard.

"But I never wanted you dead."

I looked at him for a long moment.

"I believe that."

Hope flashed across his face.

Then I finished.

"But you wanted me broken."

His shoulders collapsed.

"And that's enough."

Before anyone could speak again...

One of my father's security officers ran toward him.

"Sir!"

Richard turned.

"What is it?"

The officer handed him a tablet.

"We just hacked Victor's offshore servers."

Richard scanned the screen.

For the first time since arriving...

He smiled.

It wasn't a warm smile.

It was the smile of a man who had just found the final move in a decades-long chess match.

Victor noticed immediately.

"What did you find?"

Richard looked up.

"Everything."

Victor's confidence finally cracked.

Richard raised the tablet.

"We have every account."

"Every payment."

"Every shell company."

"Every recording."

"Every assassination order."

Even Victor's own men exchanged nervous glances.

Richard took one more step forward.

"It's over."

Victor slowly reached inside his jacket.

Instantly dozens of weapons were raised.

I held my breath.

Was he reaching for a gun?

Instead...

He removed a small remote control.

One red button.

He smiled again.

"You still think this was about money."

Then he pressed it.

Nothing happened.

For one second...

Two seconds...

Three...

Then every phone inside the house vibrated at exactly the same time.

Mine.

Andrew's.

My father's.

Even the mysterious encrypted phone.

A single notification appeared on every screen.

DNA RESULTS SUCCESSFULLY DELIVERED

Confused, I opened the file.

The first line made my knees buckle.

Biological Father: Victor Blackwell.

I stared at the words in horror.

"No..."

"It can't be..."

Richard grabbed my phone.

His face turned deathly pale.

Victor smiled wider than ever.

May you like

"You've been protecting the wrong daughter for thirty years."
