Chapter 3: The Architect's Confession

(Julian shoves Vivian hard into the dark, mahogany-lined study. She stumbles over the thick Persian rug, falling backward against the edge of a heavy leather sofa. Julian steps into the room, slams the heavy double doors shut, and reaches up to turn the heavy brass deadbolt. The click of the lock sounds like the sealing of a vault.)

(He rounds on her. The charming, sophisticated architect who had been holding court just ten minutes ago is completely gone. His handsome face is twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated panic and rage. His eyes are wide, manic, and darting rapidly across Vivian’s face, searching for the lie.)

Julian: (Breathing heavily, pacing the length of the room like a caged tiger.) Did you think I was stupid, Vivian? Did you really believe you could waltz into my house, sleep in my bed, and use my own daughter to extort me?!

Vivian: (Rubbing her bruised wrist, backing slowly away toward the unlit brick fireplace. Her voice shakes with terror.) Extort you? Julian, I don’t know what you’re talking about! I just wanted to show you that Mia is obsessed with a mother who abandoned her! She needs therapy, Julian! She’s drawing crazy things!

Julian: (Laughing, a dry, hollow, terrifying sound that scrapes against the walls of the study.) Abandoned. Right. Is that what we’re going with? Is that the official story you’re going to feed the lawyers? You went into the east wing sublevel, didn't you? Past the wine cellar. Down the maintenance stairwell.

Vivian: (Shaking her head frantically, tears spilling over her mascara, leaving dark tracks down her cheeks.) I have never been in the sublevel! You told me it was condemned for black mold! You told me the foundation was unsafe!

Julian: (Taking a sudden, aggressive step closer, completely cornering her against the brickwork.) Then how did she draw it, Vivian?! How does a seven-year-old girl draw a heavy steel door painted cerulean blue?! With a red ribbon?! With white lilies?!

(Vivian presses her hands against her mouth, sobbing uncontrollably. She shrinks away from him, making herself as small as possible.)

Julian: (His voice rising to a frantic, fever-pitch yell.) I drew the blueprints myself! I poured the concrete myself! I bought the paint with cash three towns over!

Vivian: (Trembling violently.) It’s a coincidence! Julian, you’re scaring me! You’re not making any sense!

Julian: (He steps forward and slams his fist violently onto his heavy oak desk. The crystal decanter rattles dangerously close to the edge.) Stop lying to me! Stop playing the frightened little bride!

(Julian runs both hands through his hair, tugging at the roots, his pristine facade cracking apart to reveal the rotting core beneath. He begins to pace again, muttering to himself as much as to her, unraveling completely under the pressure of his own buried sins.)

Julian: Nobody goes down there. The contractors never saw the sub-basement. I walled it off before the final inspection. Nobody knows about that room. Nobody knows that I used the red silk sash from Clara’s favorite evening dress to tie her hands! Nobody knows I planted white lilies in the ventilation shaft to mask the smell of the lye!

(Vivian freezes against the fireplace. The sobbing catches in her throat.)

Julian: (Turning back to her, his eyes wild and unblinking.) It’s been five years, Vivian! Five years of perfect silence! How did you get the padlock open? Did you steal my keys while I was sleeping? Did you hire a locksmith?!

(Silence stretches over the dimly lit room. The only sound is Julian’s ragged, frantic breathing, and the distant ticking of the grandfather clock in the hallway. He has laid his soul bare. He has confessed to the gruesome, calculated murder of his first wife, assuming his new fiancée had already unearthed the tomb.)

Julian: (He straightens his jacket, trying to regain some semblance of control. His voice drops into a cold, clinical, transactional tone.) How much do you want? Is the prenuptial agreement not enough for you? Is that what this little theatrical display was about? You want half the estate? You want the liquid assets? Fine.

(He walks slowly toward her, stopping mere inches from her face. The smell of his expensive cologne is suffocating.)

Julian: I will transfer five million dollars into an offshore account of your choosing by tomorrow morning. But if you ever breathe a single word of this to the police... if you ever look at my daughter again... I will carry you down to that sublevel, and I will bury you behind that blue door right next to her. Do we have an understanding?

(Julian waits for her to nod. He waits for the greedy, terrified compliance of a blackmailer who has successfully cornered her mark.)

(Vivian stands pressed against the cold brick fireplace. She looks down at her bruised wrist. She looks at the spilled wine staining her designer dress. And then, slowly, something terrifying happens.)

(The frightened, tearful expression completely vanishes from her face. The violent trembling in her shoulders stops instantly. Her posture straightens, elongating her spine until she is looking Julian dead in the eye.)

(She reaches up with a steady, perfectly calm hand, and wipes the smeared mascara from her cheek.)

Vivian: (Her voice is suddenly flat, steady, and entirely devoid of fear. It is the voice of an apex predator.) I didn't open the padlock, Julian. I didn't even know where the room was. I only knew what it looked like.

May you like

(Julian frowns, his rage faltering into deep, paralyzing confusion.)

Julian: What?
