Chapter 4: The Transplanted Heart

Chapter 3: The Transplanted Heart

(The air in the study seems to instantly freeze. Julian stares at the woman standing before him, realizing with a sickening jolt that he does not know who she is. The submissive, adoring fiancée he had paraded in front of his wealthy friends has evaporated like mist.)

Vivian: (She steps away from the fireplace, her high heels clicking sharply against the hardwood floor. She is no longer retreating; she is advancing.) I didn’t take Mia down into the sublevel. I would never subject a child to the horrors you built in the dark.

Julian: (Stumbling backward, bumping into his own desk.) Then how... the drawing...

Vivian: (A cold, razor-thin smile touches her lips.) I just told her a bedtime story, Julian. When I tucked her in tonight, I told her a fairy tale. I told her a story about a beautiful blue door, wrapped in a red bow and surrounded by white lilies, where her mommy’s magic was secretly hiding. I told her that if she drew it and showed it to you at the party, it would make you so happy.

(Julian’s mind struggles to process the geometry of the trap that has just closed around him. He looks at the heavy, locked double doors. He looks back at Vivian.)

Julian: (His voice barely a whisper, the blood draining completely from his face.) You... you planted the drawing. You made her draw it to trigger me. Why?

Vivian: (She walks over to the desk, picking up the crystal decanter and casually pouring a small measure of scotch into a glass.) Because for five years, the police couldn't find Clara's body. The detectives knew you did it, Julian. Everyone knew you did it. But they couldn't prove she didn't just pack a bag and walk out on your abusive, narcissistic control. They couldn't secure a warrant for an estate this massive without probable cause.

(She takes a slow sip of the scotch, savoring the burn.)

Vivian: They needed a location. And more importantly, they needed a confession. You are a meticulous man, Julian. You leave no physical evidence. The only way to catch you was to make you defeat yourself.

Julian: (Staring at her, his hands beginning to shake violently as the realization sets in. He is completely, inescapably trapped.) Who the hell are you? You’re not a real estate broker. Who sent you?

(Vivian sets the glass down. She reaches up to her elaborate, perfectly styled updo. Her fingers slide into the hair, and she pulls out a long, pearl-tipped hairpin.)

(She holds it up to the dim light of the study. Attached to the very end of the metal pin is a tiny, blinking red light and a microscopic transmitter.)

(Vivian snaps the pin in half with a sharp crack and tosses the pieces onto Julian’s desk. They land right next to a framed photograph of the two of them.)

Vivian: Clara didn't have any family left. That’s why you chose her as your victim. You thought she was an orphan in the world. You knew no one would come looking when she disappeared. No angry fathers, no suspicious brothers.

(Julian’s eyes are locked onto the blinking red light of the broken transmitter. The full weight of his hubris crushes down upon his chest, making it impossible to breathe.)

Vivian: But you didn't know she was an altruistic organ donor, Julian. Six years ago, before you locked her behind that blue door, Clara gave a piece of her liver to a dying stranger. A woman who was given three weeks to live. Clara walked into a hospital and saved a life she didn't even know.

(In the distance, faint but growing rapidly louder, the high, piercing wail of police sirens begins to cut through the quiet night air of the estate.)

Julian: (His eyes widen in absolute horror. He looks from the transmitter to Vivian’s face.) No...

Vivian: (Stepping toward him, her eyes burning with a cold, absolute triumph. She places a hand flat against his chest, right over his pounding heart.) I'm the stranger, Julian. And I've spent the last five years hunting the monster who killed the woman who saved my life. I changed my name. I studied your business. I made myself into your perfect woman. All to get inside this house.

(The sirens are deafening now. The screech of heavy tires sounds from the gravel driveway outside. Red and blue lights begin to violently flash through the study windows, casting chaotic, spinning shadows across Julian’s terrified face.)

(Heavy footsteps pound against the marble floor of the foyer. The sound of shouting voices echoes through the empty house.)

Julian: (Falling to his knees, his hands gripping the edge of the desk, weeping openly as his empire collapses into dust.) Clara... oh god...

(The heavy oak double doors of the study are violently kicked from the outside. The brass deadbolt splinters. The wood groans under the force of the battering ram.)

May you like

(Vivian looks down at the broken, sobbing man at her feet. She smooths the front of her wine-stained emerald gown.)

Vivian: The wedding is off, darling.
