Chapter 3 - The Unspoken Hero

The morning sun filtered through the sheer curtains of Julian's living room, casting a warm, golden glow over the expensive mahogany furniture. It felt like a completely different house than the one that had been a crime scene just twelve hours prior.
Maya sat on the edge of the velvet sofa, a steaming mug of chamomile tea clutched in both hands. She still wore her scrubs, though someone had draped a heavy cashmere blanket over her shoulders. She looked exhausted, her eyes rimmed with red.
Julian walked in from the kitchen, holding a plate of buttered toast. He set it gently on the coffee table in front of her.
"How is she?" Maya asked, her voice raspy.
"Sleeping," Julian said softly, sitting in the armchair opposite her. "The paramedics said her vitals are completely stable. It’s just the shock. She’s strong, Maya. Stronger than Victoria ever gave her credit for."
Maya nodded, staring down at her tea. "Mr. Julian... I need to know. If you knew she was stealing the money, if you knew she was faking the medical records... why didn't you stop her sooner? Why did you let it get so far? She almost killed your mother last night."
Julian sighed, running a hand through his unkempt hair. The heavy bags under his eyes spoke of months of sleepless nights.
"I wanted to," Julian admitted, his voice thick with guilt. "God, Maya, every single day I had to smile at her across the breakfast table, knowing she was poisoning my mother’s life. It took everything in me not to throw her out on the street the moment I found out."
He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "But Victoria is smart. Too smart. The money transfers? She structured them brilliantly. If I confronted her, she would have claimed it was a tax strategy for the estate. The fake pills? She would have blamed the pharmacy or the doctor. She had built plausible deniability into every single crime she committed."
"So you had to catch her doing something she couldn't explain away," Maya realized, her eyes widening.
"Exactly," Julian nodded. "I had to prove intent. I had to prove malice. The FBI told me that unless we had hard evidence of her directly attempting to harm my mother, her high-priced lawyers would plead it down to a white-collar misdemeanor. She’d get probation and walk away with millions."
"But the vase..." Maya shuddered, remembering the heavy crystal swinging through the air.
"I was standing right around the corner, Maya. I was watching on the live-feed from the hidden camera," Julian said, his eyes fierce. "I would never have let her strike either of you. I was waiting for her to raise the weapon. The moment she did, it crossed the legal threshold into attempted murder. The FBI needed to see the weapon in her hand."
Maya fell silent, processing the massive, invisible chess game Julian had been playing around her for months.
"There's something else," Maya said quietly, setting her mug down. She reached into the pocket of her scrubs and pulled out a small, crumpled piece of paper. She handed it to Julian.
Julian unfolded it. It was a handwritten note.
Maya, if anything happens to me, look under the floorboard in the guest bathroom. – Beatrice.
Julian stared at his mother's shaky handwriting. "When did she give this to you?"
May you like
"Yesterday morning. When Victoria was at her pilates class," Maya said. "Your mother wasn't as disoriented as Victoria thought. She knew something was wrong. She asked me not to tell you because she was terrified Victoria would hurt you too."
Julian felt a cold knot form in his stomach. He stood up immediately. "Come with me."
