Chapter 6 - The Ghost of the Past

Julian stared at the photograph, his mind struggling to process the image. The man stepping out of the sleek black town car was older, his hair silver instead of salt-and-pepper, and a thick scar ran along his jawline. But the cold, calculating eyes were unmistakable.

"Desmond Hayes," Julian whispered, the name tasting like ash in his mouth.

Agent Vance nodded slowly. "Your father’s co-founder. The man who supposedly drowned in Puget Sound during a storm ten years ago. His body was never recovered, but the Coast Guard declared him dead. The life insurance paid out over forty million dollars."

"To his shell companies," Julian realized, the pieces falling into place with sickening speed. "My father always suspected Desmond was embezzling from the firm, but he couldn't prove it before the accident. He died a year later of a heart attack, entirely consumed by the stress."

Maya, standing a few feet away, gently guided Beatrice into a nearby leather chair in the courthouse lobby. Beatrice's eyes caught sight of the photograph in Julian's hand. Her breath hitched.

"Mom?" Julian knelt beside her, hiding the photo. "It's okay. It's over."

"It's Desmond," Beatrice rasped, her voice trembling but remarkably clear. "I saw him, Julian. Six months ago. Through the living room window. I told Victoria there was a ghost in the driveway. She told me my mind was slipping... she used that to get the doctor to prescribe those awful pills."

Julian’s fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white. Victoria hadn't just been gaslighting a vulnerable woman; she had been covering up the existence of a ghost.

"Elias Thorne confessed that Desmond never lost touch with Victoria," Agent Vance explained, gesturing for them to walk toward a secured exit. "In fact, Desmond introduced you to Victoria. Think about it, Julian. The charity gala five years ago? It was a setup. She was a plant. Desmond used her to infiltrate your life, marry you, and slowly position herself to steal the entire Stirling estate."

Julian felt a wave of nausea wash over him. Every memory he had with Victoria—their wedding, their honeymoon in Paris, every shared laugh, and whispered secret—was a meticulously crafted lie orchestrated by the man who had ruined his father.

"Where is he now?" Julian asked, his voice chillingly flat.

"He’s gone to ground," Vance replied. "The moment Elias missed his check-in call from the airport, Desmond knew the plan was blown. But men like Desmond don’t just run. They leave scorched earth behind. We are placing you, your mother, and Maya under twenty-four-hour protection."

Maya wrapped her arms around herself, shivering despite the warm afternoon air. She was just a nurse. She had taken this job to pay off her student loans, not to become a target for a dead billionaire’s revenge plot.

Julian looked at Maya, seeing the raw terror in her eyes. "I promise you, Maya. He won't touch you. I won't let him."

Julian’s mind was already spinning, transitioning from a betrayed husband into the ruthless cybersecurity architect that had built digital fortresses for the world's most powerful tech giants. Desmond Hayes thought he was untraceable. But Julian knew a fundamental truth of the modern world: every ghost leaves a digital footprint.
