CHAPTER 2 — THE COLONEL'S CALL

The footsteps outside the apartment weren't random.

They moved with discipline.

Measured.

Purposeful.

Ryan looked toward the front door just as three military police officers entered behind two detectives from the Chicago Police Department. Colonel James Bennett hadn't become one of the Army's most respected commanders by ignoring his instincts. The moment Emily stopped answering his calls two weeks earlier, he'd quietly contacted local authorities and asked them to accompany him if his worst fears proved true.

Now they had.

The lead detective froze when he saw the bruises.

"Oh my God..."

Emily instinctively covered her stomach, ashamed of wounds she had never caused.

Colonel Bennett gently wrapped the blanket around her shoulders again.

"You don't hide anymore," he whispered.

Ryan took a desperate step backward.

"This isn't what it looks like."

Detective Sarah Morales looked at him without blinking.

"Then tell me what it looks like."

Ryan's mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Linda suddenly burst into tears.

"She bruises easily! Pregnancy makes women's skin sensitive!"

Colonel Bennett slowly walked toward her.

His voice remained calm—the same voice soldiers trusted in combat.

"My daughter has a bruise shaped exactly like a man's hand."

Linda stopped crying.

"There are fingerprints on her ribs."

Ryan tried again.

"She fell down the stairs."

Emily finally spoke.

"No..."

Every eye turned toward her.

"I never fell."

The room became so quiet that even the ticking kitchen clock sounded loud.

Ryan's face lost all color.

Emily's hands shook violently as months of fear collapsed inside her.

"The first time..."

Her voice cracked.

"...was when dinner wasn't ready."

Ryan whispered, "Emily..."

"The second time was because I laughed while talking to Dad."

Linda screamed.

"Stop lying!"

Emily looked directly at her mother-in-law for the first time in months.

"You held the bedroom door shut."

Linda's breathing became uneven.

"You told him to teach me respect."

Detective Morales immediately nodded toward another officer.

"Cuff them."

Ryan panicked.

"You can't arrest us!"

Colonel Bennett's eyes never left him.

"You should have thought about that before putting your hands on my daughter."

As officers escorted Ryan away, he shouted one final sentence.

"You'll never prove anything!"

Emily closed her eyes.

She almost believed him.

Until Detective Morales quietly said,

"We already have more than you realize."

Because Colonel Bennett had noticed something else.

A small security camera hidden above the apartment entrance.

May you like

Someone had recorded every visitor for months.

And perhaps much more.
