CHAPTER 3 — THE TRUTH THEY FORGOT TO ERASE

Emily was taken directly to the hospital.

Doctors photographed every injury.

X-rays revealed two partially healed rib fractures.

Several bruises were less than twenty-four hours old.

The baby's heartbeat remained strong.

When Colonel Bennett heard it through the monitor, tears finally escaped the man who had survived two wars without flinching.

"My little fighter," he whispered.

Meanwhile, detectives executed a search warrant.

Ryan believed he had deleted everything.

He was wrong.

A forensic technician recovered hundreds of messages from his phone.

One conversation with Linda stopped everyone cold.

Linda: She's becoming too independent.

Ryan: She keeps calling her father.

Linda: Then remind her who her real family is now.

Another message followed.

Don't hit her face. People notice faces.

Detective Morales stared at the screen in disbelief.

It became worse.

Hidden inside a closet officers discovered Emily's old phone.

The screen was shattered.

But the memory chip survived.

On it were dozens of unsent video recordings.

Emily had secretly filmed herself after each assault.

Some videos lasted only seconds because Ryan had interrupted her.

Others showed bruises spreading across her stomach while she quietly apologized to the baby growing inside her.

"I'm sorry you have to hear this," she whispered in one recording.

"I promise I'll get us out."

Colonel Bennett couldn't watch another second.

He stepped into the hallway and leaned against the wall.

For the first time in years...

The Colonel cried.

Not because he felt helpless.

Because his daughter had believed she had to fight the war alone.

That night prosecutors upgraded the investigation.

Domestic battery.

Unlawful imprisonment.

Witness intimidation.

Conspiracy.

May you like

Ryan realized prison was no longer a possibility.

It was becoming a certainty.
