The lineage of silence: The true owner

Part 2: The Crystal Palace Shattered

The atmosphere in the grand hall turned icy, as if the air had been sucked out of the room. Veronica, who just moments before had arrogantly ruled over the fate of the worker, felt her knees buckle. The title of "fiancée" she held crumbled before her eyes with terrifying speed.

The employees, witnesses to this social implosion, stood like statues, afraid even to breathe too loudly. Marta's figure, always bent from hard labor and submission, now seemed to acquire immense dignity under Alejandro's protective arm. He was not only her employer; he was her son, and blood is a bond that no lie can break.

"Your... your mother?" Veronica stammered, her voice breaking and her eyes wide with horror at her own stupidity. "But she's been working here as a maid for years." How could no one have known? Her brain tried to process reality, but the pieces didn't fit into her worldview.

Alejandro, still holding Marta, shot her a look so pure and contemptuous that Verónica took a step back, stumbling over a Louis XIV-style chair. "That's precisely why I worked here," he replied with icy calm. "To meet the woman who was going to share my life. And today, Verónica, you failed the final exam."

Marta, despite her tears, lifted her chin. Her gaze was no longer that of a maid who lowers her eyes in the face of insults. It was the gaze of a mother who had watched her son grow up and was now seeing her judgment fulfilled. "I wasn't the one who stole, daughter," she said, her voice, for the first time, powerful. "I was the one who watched you put that necklace in your own purse, hoping to blame me to get rid of me in this house."

The accusation struck like lightning in the middle of a storm. Veronica paled instantly, but her survival instinct compelled her to attempt one last desperate maneuver. “It’s a lie! You’re all in cahoots! You two want to get rid of me because you know my family has more power in the city than this company!”

Alejandro let out a dry laugh, devoid of any joy. The sound echoed off the marble walls and reached every corner of the mansion. “Your family has paper power, Veronica. But the real power, the one that pulls the strings in this mansion and your bank accounts, has always been in my mother’s hands.”

The ensuing silence was absolute. The idea that Marta was the true owner of the fortune, hiding behind the guise of a humble employee, was a fatal blow to Veronica’s aspirations. She had tried to expel the lady of the house, treating her like a common criminal.

“Pack your things,” Alejandro said, pointing toward the exit. You have five minutes before the security personnel, who, by the way, also answer to her, escort you to the front door. I don't want anything of yours left under this roof. Not even a trace of your arrogance.

Veronica began to tremble. She knew that if she crossed that threshold, she would not only lose her status, but her family would fall into financial ruin before dawn. She tried to approach Alejandro to plead, but Marta stepped forward, her authority stopping the young woman in her tracks.

"You've spoken enough, Veronica," Marta said, with a serenity more terrifying than any shout. "You've shown that wealth has taught you nothing about humanity. And in this family, humanity is the only requirement for staying."

Defeated and humiliated, the young woman turned and ran toward the spiral staircase, rushing up to her rooms to gather her belongings in a state of barely contained hysteria. Alejandro stayed in the living room, watching his mother retrieve the empty jewelry box and slowly close it.

"Why now?" Marta asked, turning to her son with profound sadness. "We knew she was a hollow person, but I hoped time could change her." Alejandro shook his head, staring at the ceiling, where Verónica's frantic footsteps echoed.

"Not everything can be fixed, Mother. Some people aren't broken; they're simply made of a material that can never reflect the light. But this isn't over," he added, his voice dropping to a somber tone. "I know who helped her plan this. I know who gave her the idea to frame you."

Marta tensed at that. "What do you mean?" Alejandro walked to the table where the jewelry box had been and pulled out a sealed envelope containing confidential documents. "Veronica didn't act alone. She had an accomplice on the board of directors. Someone who wanted you out of the mansion so they could take control of the shares."

The turn of events was unexpected and dark. Marta leaned closer to read the names on the documents, and her eyes widened in horror as she recognized a signature that...
