The lineage of silence: The true owner

Part 3: The Traitor in the Shadows

The air in the office grew heavy as Alejandro presented the evidence. Marta held the paper, her hand trembling visibly at the betrayal. The name of Julián, her nephew, shone at the bottom of the document like a death sentence for family trust.

"He didn't just want your position, Mother," Alejandro explained, pacing the office with tense steps. "He wanted the entire company. Verónica was just the pawn, the pretty, arrogant face that would distract everyone while he emptied our accounts from within."

Marta sat down, feeling the weight of the years finally catching up with her. "We raised him like a son, Alejandro. We gave him an education, a job, a place at this table. Why the hatred? Why the greed of someone who already had everything? Betrayal always hurts more when it comes from within."

“Greed knows no bounds,” Alejandro declared, turning off the living room lights so that shadows filled the room. “Julián thinks we know nothing. He thinks his plan is still on. We’ll let him keep believing that until he makes his final mistake.”

Upstairs, Verónica came down the stairs with a small suitcase, her eyes red and her hands clenched. Seeing Alejandro and Marta talking so intensely, she stopped, trying to listen, but realized her time was up. Security was already there.

“Out,” said the head of security, a man who for years had pretended not to see anything while Marta suffered Verónica’s slights. The young woman, too weak to reply, stepped out into the cold night, feeling like an outcast. But before getting into her car, she received an anonymous message.

“The game isn’t over. If you give me access to the main safe, we can destroy Alejandro and Marta for good.” The sender was Julián. Verónica smiled, a grimace of pure desperation, and replied with a simple, “I’m in. Do what you have to do.”

Marta, meanwhile, felt like something was missing from the puzzle. She looked at Alejandro, who was deep in thought. “He’s coming today, isn’t he? It’s the annual shareholders’ meeting.” Alejandro nodded with an icy smile. “And it will be the perfect stage for his downfall.”

The annual meeting was the most important event of the year. All the company staff, investors, and the press would be there. Alejandro planned to expose Julián to everyone, but what they didn’t know was that Julián, warned by Verónica, had decided to get ahead of them.

Minutes before it was due to begin, the mansion’s security systems failed. The lights went out completely, plunging the house into absolute darkness. Marta felt a sharp chill on her neck; someone was behind her. A voice, unmistakable and full of hatred, whispered in her ear.

“The game’s over, Auntie. You don’t own anything anymore.” Marta tried to scream, but a gloved hand covered her mouth. Alejandro, at the other end of the room, heard the struggle and ran toward the sound, only to find himself with the barrel of a gun pointed directly at his chest.

A flash of lightning illuminated the room, revealing Julián with an expression of utter madness. Verónica stood beside him, holding a suitcase full of documents. “Give us everything, Alejandro,” Julián shouted, losing control. “The codes, the accounts, everything. Or she dies right now.”

The fate of Marta’s life and the survival of the family fortune hung in the balance. Alejandro, maintaining his characteristic composure, stared at his nephew and began to laugh. “Julián, do you really think I didn’t leave a trap set for this very moment?”

Julián’s finger trembled on the trigger. The tension reached a breaking point. Alejandro stepped forward, daring his cousin to shoot, while from the shadows, a beam of red light from a precision rifle appeared on Julián's chest, but it wasn't from the police.
