Chapter 14 - THE FATHER WHO NEVER DIED

Federal agents took control of the underground archive beneath the estate.

The evidence involved public officials, foreign accounts, and crimes spanning more than thirty years.

Grant temporarily stepped down as chief executive of Whitmore Global.

The company’s board accused him of damaging the family name.

Grant responded by releasing a public statement.

“My family’s name was damaged long before I learned the truth.”

He promised to cooperate with every investigation.

Investors panicked.

The company’s stock collapsed.

Several directors resigned.

For the first time, Grant seemed relieved.

He had spent his entire life carrying an empire built by someone else.

Now he was willing to let it fall.

Lily remained under constant protection.

She slept in a secure room beside mine.

The burns near her scalp began healing.

Her voice grew stronger every day.

She asked questions about Evelyn.

Some were easy.

Others broke Grant’s heart.

“Did Mommy know I was hiding?”

“Yes.”

“Was she scared?”

“Yes.”

“Did she think I left her?”

“No.”

Grant held Lily’s hands.

“Your mother knew you were trying to survive.”

One afternoon, a package arrived at the estate.

There was no return address.

Inside was an antique silver watch that had belonged to Henry Whitmore.

The watch had supposedly been buried with him.

A handwritten note rested beneath it.

Grant,

Your wife mistook curiosity for courage.

Do not teach your daughter the same mistake.

H.W.

Federal agents analyzed the note.

The ink was less than forty-eight hours old.

Henry Whitmore was alive.

Detective Cole reviewed old hospital records.

The body identified as Henry had been cremated after the funeral.

Dental files used for identification had disappeared.

The attending physician transferred two million dollars to an offshore account one week later.

Grant examined the silver watch.

A hidden compartment opened behind the face.

Inside was a memory card.

The card contained surveillance recordings from the Whitmore estate.

Some had been filmed years before Evelyn died.

Others were recent.

One showed Renata entering Lily’s room and threatening her.

Another showed Voss meeting Nathaniel beneath the lodge.

The final recording had been made inside the mansion two nights earlier.

It showed me standing beside Lily’s bed.

The camera angle came from inside the wall.

Someone still had access to the estate.

Harris studied the image.

“That camera isn’t connected to the security system.”

“Then how is it there?” I asked.

“It was installed during the original construction.”

Grant looked toward the ceiling.

“My father built this house.”

A faint mechanical sound came from behind the wall.

Harris raised his hand for silence.

Something moved inside the hidden passage.

Then a man’s voice whispered through the ventilation grate.

“Hello, Grant.”
