Chapter 18 - THE TRIAL OF RENATA VALE
The trials began six months later.
Federal prosecutors combined the murder case with charges involving fraud, blackmail, bribery, kidnapping, and attempted terrorism.
Henry Whitmore faced the longest list of charges.
Malcolm Voss agreed to testify in exchange for protection.
Celeste refused every deal.
Nathaniel pleaded guilty to conspiracy and accepted responsibility for his role in Evelyn’s death.
His testimony became the center of Renata’s trial.
Renata entered the courtroom wearing a gray designer suit.
She looked calm and polished.
She avoided looking at Lily.
Her attorney argued that Nathaniel had invented the confession to reduce his sentence.
Then prosecutors played the recording from the mountain lodge.
Renata’s own voice filled the courtroom.
“I pushed her.”
The jury heard her admit that Evelyn had reached for the dock.
They heard Nathaniel admit holding her beneath the water.
They heard Voss discussing the destruction of evidence.
Renata’s composure finally cracked.
She turned toward Grant.
“You would have lost everything without me.”
Grant did not respond.
“You were drowning in grief.”
She raised her voice as deputies approached.
“I saved you!”
Lily stood beside Grant.
“No.”
Her voice was clear.
“You made him forget who hurt us.”
Renata looked at her for the first time.
The hatred in her face lasted only a second, but everyone in the courtroom saw it.
The jury deliberated for seven hours.
Renata was found guilty of murder, conspiracy, child abuse, kidnapping, and attempted murder.
She received life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Voss received forty years.
Celeste received thirty-five.
Henry’s trial lasted three months.
Dozens of powerful people were arrested because of the evidence beneath the estate.
Henry was convicted on every major charge.
At sentencing, he refused to apologize.
He stared at Grant and said only one sentence.
“The empire will call you back.”
Grant answered quietly.
“There is no empire.”
Whitmore Global was dissolved.
Its legal assets were placed into a trust for employees, victims, and families harmed by Henry’s crimes.
The Whitmore mansion was no longer a symbol of power.
Grant transformed most of it into a center for children recovering from trauma.
He named it the Evelyn House.
Harris received a reduced sentence because of his cooperation and his role in saving Lily.
He served eighteen months.
After his release, he did not ask for his old job back.
He asked to maintain the gardens.
Grant agreed.
Nathaniel received twenty years.
Before being transferred, he requested one meeting with Lily.
Grant allowed Lily to decide.
She chose to see him.
Nathaniel cried when she entered.
“I’m sorry.”
Lily looked at him for a long time.
“I don’t forgive you yet.”
Nathaniel lowered his head.
