Chapter 4 - The Empire Strikes Back

By 8:00 AM the next morning, the sun was casting a golden glow across the manicured lawns of the Lawson estate, but inside my father’s high-tech private study, the atmosphere was as cold and clinical as a surgical theater.
I sat in a comfortable wingback armchair, a warm mug of tea resting between my hands. My mouth throbbed with a dull, manageable ache, and the cosmetic dentist had done an incredible temporary fix on my front tooth just an hour earlier, restoring my smile so I wouldn't have to look in the mirror and see Trevor's handiwork staring back at me. Emma was still fast asleep in the nursery upstairs, watched over by a trusted nanny.
Across the expansive mahogany desk, my father sat in his ergonomic leather chair, surrounded by three of his top corporate attorneys and his chief head of security, Marcus.
"Walk me through it, Harrison," my father commanded, taking a slow sip of black coffee.
Harrison, a sharp-eyed senior partner at the city's most ruthless corporate law firm, adjusted his glasses and slid a thick stack of printed financial documents across the desk.
"It was remarkably easy, Richard," Harrison said with a thin, confident smile. "Trevor Sterling's architectural firm, Sterling & Associates, was entirely dependent on commercial sub-contracts tied directly to Lawson Real Estate holdings. Without our backing, his cash flow completely evaporates."
"And his personal accounts?" my father asked.
"Frozen as of 6:00 AM under emergency domestic abuse asset preservation statutes," Harrison replied smoothly. "Furthermore, our forensic accountants discovered severe financial irregularities and embezzlement of client funds within Sterling & Associates. Trevor has been systematically skimming from a municipal project account to fund his personal gambling debts and expensive sports car leases."
My eyes widened slightly. I had always suspected Trevor was hiding something regarding our finances, especially given how tightly he controlled every penny while simultaneously buying expensive designer watches for himself, but I had no idea it was outright criminal embezzlement.
"Embezzlement?" my father murmured, a dark, dangerous smile touching the corners of his mouth. "Well, well. It seems our dear Trevor didn't just domesticate a domestic abuser; he built his entire career on a foundation of sand."
Marcus, the head of security, leaned forward, resting his massive forearms on the desk. "We also pulled all public traffic camera footage, neighbor dashcams, and emergency medical records from the past five years, Mr. Lawson. Even though Rebecca never filed police reports, we have digital trails of hospital visits for 'accidental falls,' text messages where Trevor threatened her if she didn't obey, and audio recordings from a smart home hub inside their kitchen that captured multiple verbal assaults."
My breath hitched in my throat. "You have audio?"
"We pulled the cloud data from the smart speaker in your kitchen, Becca," Marcus said gently, looking at me with deep respect. "He threatened you and your daughter multiple times. The district attorney is already reviewing the file. We aren't just filing for a standard divorce; we are pursuing felony domestic violence, child endangerment, and white-collar fraud charges."
"Good," my father said, slamming his hand down lightly on the desk, punctuating the word with absolute finality. "I want him arrested before dinner. I want his company liquidated, his assets seized, and his reputation completely obliterated so he can never walk into a respectable corporate office in this country again."
"It's already in motion, Richard," Harrison replied, standing up and gathering his files. "We'll let the authorities handle the legal execution. I'll keep you updated."
As the lawyers and security chiefs filed out of the study, my father stood up and walked over to my armchair, kneeling down beside me just as he had done in the foyer the day before. His stern, powerful demeanor melted away, replaced by the warm, tender affection of a doting father.
"How are you holding up, Becca?" he asked softly, taking my hand in his large, warm palm. "Are you scared?"
I looked down at my engagement ring—the modest diamond ring Trevor had bought me during our second year of dating, which now felt like a heavy iron shackle. With a steady hand, I pulled the ring off my finger and dropped it onto the coffee table with a small, metallic clatter.
"I'm not scared anymore, Dad," I whispered, meeting his gaze with newfound strength. "For five years, I let him make me feel small. I let him convince me that I was weak. But looking at what he did to Emma, and realizing what he could have done to this baby..." I placed a protective hand over my stomach. "I feel like I finally woke up. I want him to pay for every single tear my daughter shed."
My father smiled proudly, his eyes shining with unshed tears. "He will, sweetheart. I promise you, he will lose everything he ever built."
May you like
Just then, the heavy oak door of the study swung open without warning, and a breathless security guard rushed inside, looking flustered.
"Mr. Lawson," the guard panted slightly. "You need to see the front security monitors immediately. Trevor Sterling is at the main gates. And he's brought a camera crew."
