Chapter 5 - The Public Spectacle

My heart gave a violent, panicked jolt. "A camera crew? How did he even find out where this estate is?"
"He didn't follow us yesterday, Becca," my father said, his jaw tightening into a hard, unforgiving line as he stood up to his full height. "He must have tracked your car via your phone's location sharing or staked out your doctor's office this morning. And he's trying to get ahead of the narrative by playing the victim."
"What is he planning to do?" I asked, my hands trembling slightly against the warm ceramic mug.
"The oldest trick in the desperate abuser's playbook," my father replied coldly, walking over to the wall-mounted monitor panel and tapping the screen. "He's staging a public stunt to paint himself as the grieving, heartbroken husband whose cruel, elitist billionaire father-in-law kidnapped his innocent wife and child."
The high-definition security display flickered to life, showing the grand wrought-iron security gates at the bottom of the estate's long driveway.
Sure enough, there stood Trevor. He had deliberately messed up his hair, untucked his shirt slightly to look disheveled, and was standing in front of a live local news van bearing the logo of Channel 4 Eyewitness News. A reporter holding a microphone was thrusting it toward Trevor's face while a cameraman recorded every theatrical sniffle.
"Look at him," I whispered in sheer disbelief. "He looks like a grieving puppy, but behind closed doors, he broke my tooth and threatened to destroy us."
On the audio feed from the gate intercom, we could hear Trevor's trembling, dramatic voice addressing the reporter.
"...I just want my wife and my baby back!" Trevor cried out on television, dabbing a theatrical tear from his eye with a tissue. "Richard Lawson used his billions of dollars to kidnap my family! Rebecca didn't leave voluntarily! She loves our home! Her father has always looked down on me because I'm a self-made man, and now he's using his wealth to tear my family apart!"
The reporter looked intensely into the camera lens. "You heard it here first, folks. Trevor Sterling, owner of Sterling & Associates, claims that billionaire real estate mogul Richard Lawson has abducted his pregnant daughter and toddler granddaughter in a high-society power play. We have reached out to the Lawson estate for comment, but so far—"
"Marcus!" my father barked sharply, speaking into his communicator watch.
"Sir?" Marcus's voice crackled back instantly.
"Open the front security gates. Let the news van drive right up to the main courtyard. And bring out the portable media projector from the media room."
I looked up at my father in shock. "Dad, you're going to let them film on the property? Won't that make a circus out of this?"
"Becca," my father said, turning to me with a calm, predatory smile that reminded me why he ruled the commercial real estate world with an iron fist. "Never interrupt an enemy while they are actively making a catastrophic mistake. Trevor wants a public spectacle? I'm going to give him a grand finale he will never, ever forget."
Ten minutes later, the Channel 4 news van rolled up the winding driveway and parked right in the center of the mansion's cobblestone courtyard.
Trevor stepped out of a car trailing behind the van, looking confident now that he had a camera lens pointed directly at his face. He clearly believed that by creating immediate public pressure, my father would be forced to quietly hand me and Emma back to him to avoid a media scandal.
How utterly little he understood the man who raised me.
My father didn't send lawyers. He didn't send security guards to physically throw Trevor off the property. Instead, the massive double doors of the mansion swung open, and my father walked out onto the stone portico alone, stepping gracefully into the crisp morning air.
Behind him, two estate staff members rolled out a massive, high-definition digital billboard screen, plugging it directly into the mansion's exterior AV system.
Trevor stopped dead in his tracks near the van, his smug, theatrical expression faltering slightly as he saw my father standing tall and completely unbothered.
"Richard!" Trevor shouted loudly for the benefit of the rolling camera, marching toward the portico with exaggerated grief. "Where is my wife? Where is my baby? You can't just imprison them here!"
My father didn't even flinch. He simply raised one hand, holding a sleek black tablet.
"Cut the microphone feed, Marcus," my father said smoothly, his voice carrying effortlessly across the courtyard through the estate's hidden directional speakers.
Suddenly, the audio output from the news crew's microphones was forcibly overridden by the Lawson estate's master broadcast system.
"Trevor Sterling," my father's voice boomed across the courtyard, calm, measured, and lethal. "You brought a news crew here today claiming I abducted my daughter. You claimed that your household is a place of peace and love, and that my daughter suffered a tragic 'accidental fall' in the kitchen."
Trevor's face instantly turned as white as paper. He stopped walking, his knees visibly buckling. "What... what are you talking about?"
"Let's check the kitchen security footage, shall we?" my father said casually, tapping the screen of his tablet.
Behind my father, the massive outdoor digital billboard flickered to life. Instantly, crystal-clear high-definition video footage began playing across the giant screen for the news cameraman, the reporter, and the entire city to witness.
It showed the interior of my pale-blue kitchen. It showed Trevor screaming at an eighteen-month-old toddler for wanting a cookie. It showed him turning around in a blind, violent rage, rearing back his fist, and striking me so hard that my tooth shattered and blood sprayed across the floor. And through the high-fidelity smart-home audio speakers, the sickening crack echoed across the entire courtyard, followed by my toddler daughter's terrified screams.
The courtyard fell into an absolute, suffocating dead silence.

The news reporter slowly lowered his microphone, staring up at the giant screen in stunned, horrified disgust.
And on the screen, Trevor Sterling's entire life went up in smoke.
