Chapter 2: The Secret Protector

The door slammed shut behind Lady Victoria, leaving the heavy scent of jasmine lingering in the air like a poisonous fog. Chloe collapsed back against the pillows, tears of raw, suffocating agony slicing down her pale cheeks. Her broken body throbbed with every frantic beat of her heart.

Julian. The man she had shared a bed with for two years. The man who had held her hand through months of morning sickness, whispering that their baby would change the cold, corporate world of the Sterling family forever. It had all been a lie. A calculated, multi-million-dollar trap.

She looked toward the bassinet. Her tiny son let out a soft, mewling cry. Her instincts screamed at her to get up, to hold him, but the stitches across her abdomen felt like hot knives pulling apart. She was completely helpless.

Suddenly, the mechanical hiss of the oxygen machine changed rhythm. A shadow fell across the threshold of the bathroom door inside the VIP suite.

Chloe gasped, pushing herself back against the headboard as a tall man in a dark grey suit stepped into the room. He wasn't one of Victoria’s guards. He had a rugged, weather-beaten face, sharp amber eyes, and a quiet, lethal presence that instantly commanded the room.

"Who are you?" Chloe whispered, her hand moving defensively toward her chest. "Did Victoria send you to finish me?"

"If Victoria knew I was here, she would have had this entire wing locked down," the man said, his voice a deep, calming baritone. He walked over to the bed, completely ignoring the legal folder, and looked into the bassinet. A surprisingly gentle expression touched his rough features before he looked back at Chloe.

"My name is Alexander Vance," he said softly.Chloe’s breath caught. Alexander Vance was a legendary name in the global diamond industry—the sole rival to the Sterling empire, a reclusive billionaire tycoon who had completely vanished from New York high society five years ago after a mysterious falling out with Julian Sterling.

"I was your mother's business partner before she passed away, Chloe," Alexander said, reaching into his jacket and pulling out a small, old-fashioned silver locket. "And I promised her, long before you ever met Julian, that I would keep you safe from the wolves. The Sterlings didn't choose you by accident. They knew exactly who you were, even if you didn't."
