Chapter 1 - The Dark Storage Room

That afternoon, I arrived early to pick her up. Instead of hearing children laughing, I heard muffled sobs behind the equipment storage room. My heart nearly stopped.
I pulled open the door and found Lily curled into a corner in complete darkness, trembling so badly she could barely stand. The instant she saw me, she ran into my arms. "Daddy..." She couldn't stop crying.
Between shaky breaths, she told me her teacher, Mrs. Gable, had embarrassed her in front of the class, shoved her into the storage room, locked the door, and said she needed to "learn respect." I quietly recorded the room, the locked door, and Lily's condition before walking straight to the classroom.
I held up my phone. "Would you like to explain this?"
Mrs. Gable barely glanced at the video. "Your daughter is difficult," she replied coldly. "Some children only learn through consequences."

Before I could answer, Principal Halloway stepped into the hallway wearing the confident smile of someone who believed the outcome was already decided. "If that recording leaves your phone," he said evenly, "your daughter will be expelled. We'll make sure every respected private school knows exactly why she shouldn't be admitted."
He wasn't trying to solve a problem. He was trying to bury one.
