Chapter 3 - The Internal Network
I thought the evidence ended there, but Lily whispered something while a nurse examined the bruises on her wrist. “Mrs. Gable said other kids learned faster.”
I asked what she meant. Lily told me about three students who had disappeared from class for hours after questioning the teacher. One boy returned shaking and refused to speak. Another transferred schools the following week.
Investigators searched the storage room again. Behind a row of athletic mats, they found a small camera connected to the school’s internal network. It had recorded children being locked inside for years.
The files had not been deleted. They had been organized. Each folder carried a student’s name, disciplinary notes, and private family information. Halloway had used the recordings to pressure parents into withdrawing complaints, threatening scholarships, recommendations, and admissions records.
This was not one cruel teacher losing control. It was a system.

The school board called an emergency meeting and tried offering me a confidential settlement. I declined. “My daughter is not a public-relations problem,” I said. “She is a witness.”
Several families came forward after Lily’s recording became evidence. Their children described the same darkness, the same threats, and the same warning never to tell anyone.
