Chapter 5 - The General's Order

Within four hours, the Pentagon authorized a joint task force led by military intelligence. I didn't need to put on my uniform; my rank didn't matter—my command did.
Fearing a total raid, Halloway crumbled under federal interrogation. He gave up the network, the offshore servers, and the buyer's identity—a disgraced former military officer who had once served under my command overseas.
By midnight, federal agents had arrested Mrs. Gable at her residence and seized the contractor’s local safehouse, recovering terabytes of stolen military surveillance. The school district was stripped of its administration, and formal federal indictments were handed down.
Justice had arrived like a thunderstorm. But for Lily and me, the real victory didn't happen in a courtroom or an interrogation room.
Two days later, I stood in the backyard watching Lily play under the afternoon sun. She was wearing her favorite yellow dress, laughing as she chased our dog through the grass. The shadows under her eyes were fading. The fear was slowly letting go.
My encrypted phone vibrated in my pocket.
I pulled it out and answered.
"General," a dark, synthesized voice spoke through the secure line. "You destroyed our network in the state. You put Halloway and his teachers behind bars. You think you protected your daughter."
I didn't raise my voice. I looked at Lily laughing in the yard, perfectly safe, perfectly loved.
"I didn't just destroy your network," I said quietly, with the calm weight of a man who had commanded armies. "I know who funded you. And I know where you're calling from."
There was a long pause on the other end of the line. The confidence in the stranger's breath wavered.
"Is that a threat, General?"
May you like
I watched Lily run toward me, holding out a dandelion she had just picked, her face bright with a smile that no locked door would ever break again.
"It's not a threat," I whispered into the phone, right before ending the call forever. "It's an operational order."
