Chapter 8: The Desperate Flight and Final Capture

Though the federal net was tightening rapidly, the conspiracy’s remaining tendrils tried to make one final, desperate bid for survival.

Late that night, while the estate outside was bathed in the red and blue flashing lights of police cruisers, a rogue estate manager—bribed heavily by Evelyn’s offshore accounts—attempted to sneak through the underground service corridors of the mansion carrying a secure briefcase containing encrypted hard drives and bearer bonds. He hoped to use the stolen capital to secure bail for Evelyn and flee the country before federal prosecutors seized all remaining assets.

However, the sprawling underground labyrinth of the Sterling estate was monitored by an independent security backup grid that Arthur had activated the moment the lockdown began.

Sophie, having finished assisting the medical team in the parlor, was walking down the quiet stone-lined service corridor toward the staff quarters when she heard the faint scuffling of hurried footsteps echoing against the brick walls.

She stopped, turning off the handheld service light to blend into the shadows of an arched alcove.

A heavy metal door clicked open, and the rogue estate manager hurried past her, clutching the black leather briefcase tightly against his chest, muttering curses under his breath.

Sophie didn't hesitate. Though she was unarmed and still wearing her grey maid uniform, her quick thinking took over. She spotted a heavy brass floor-lamp standing beside a decorative planter in the alcove. With a swift, calculated motion, she hoisted the heavy lamp and swung it cleanly across the narrow corridor, tripping the fleeing man into a pile of laundry bins.

The briefcase flew from his hands, sliding across the polished stone floor right to the feet of two armed federal agents who were sweeping the lower level.

"Federal agents! Stay down!" one officer shouted, pinning the suspect to the ground with practiced efficiency and slapping steel handcuffs around his wrists.

The lead agent looked down at the retrieved briefcase, then turned to Sophie, who stood calmly holding the brass lamp.

"Nice defensive maneuver, miss," the agent noted with an approving nod. "That briefcase contains the final offshore ledger connecting Mrs. Sterling to the embezzlement ring. You just wrapped up the entire case."

Sophie set the lamp back in its place, offering a polite, composed smile. "Just doing my job."

Upstairs in the master wing, the news of the briefcase's recovery marked the definitive end of the nightmare. Evelyn’s elaborate, cruel empire of deceit had completely crumbled into dust.
