Chapter 13 - WHEN JULIAN WALKED OUT ALONE

Julian left federal prison after serving eight years.

No black cars waited.

No armed men stood beside the gate.

The Rostova organization no longer existed in its old form.

Some members remained incarcerated.

Others entered legitimate work.

A few still hated Julian for cooperating.

Federal supervision limited his travel and finances.

He rented a small apartment above a bakery in Queens.

Clara did not meet him at the gate.

She met him two weeks later at a public coffee shop.

Julian wore a plain gray coat.

Without the tailored suits and silent men around him, people did not recognize him.

“You look disappointed,” he said.

“I expected thunder.”

“The weather no longer obeys me.”

“That must be difficult.”

“Humiliating.”

She smiled despite herself.

They spoke for an hour.

Julian did not ask whether she had waited.

He asked about the project.

Highcrest.

Mateo.

Her aunt’s family.

He listened to the answers.

Then Clara asked what he planned to do.

“Work with the restitution administrators.”

“They want me to identify more hidden assets.”

“After that?”

“I do not know.”

“That is honest.”

“It is uncomfortable.”

They began seeing each other once a month.

Then twice.

Clara maintained her own home.

Her own work.

Her own money.

Julian did not arrive unannounced.

He did not assign guards without permission.

When old enemies threatened him, he informed law enforcement.

He did not call former associates.

Change appeared less dramatic than revenge.

It looked like paperwork.

Supervision meetings.

Questions asked before decisions.

Apologies that did not demand immediate acceptance.

Two years after his release, Julian asked Clara to dinner at Highcrest.

The room where Vanessa kicked her no longer hosted private elites.

It had become a public restaurant employing graduates of the worker-protection program.

Julian selected a table near the kitchen.

“Why here?” Clara asked.

“Because this was where I first saw you.”

“You saw me bleeding on the floor.”

“I saw everyone else refusing to move.”

“And you?”

“I arrived late.”

Clara looked at him.

“You arrived after I had already chosen to protect Bishop.”

“Yes.”

He did not claim the rescue as his own.

That mattered.
