Chapter 5 - WHAT HAPPENED TO THOMAS HAYES

Julian took Clara to an office beneath his Manhattan restaurant the following morning.

Detective Lila Grant came too.

No one entered without being recorded.

Julian opened a safe and removed a sealed envelope.

THOMAS HAYES was written across it.

“My father left this after his death.”

“Why didn’t you open it?”

“I did.”

“I did not understand what it meant.”

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Julian,

Thomas found proof that Mikhail’s father and several captains were taking money from the family accounts.

He also found payments connected to judges and police.

He wants to expose everyone, including us.

I ordered him to stop.

He refused.

If anything happens to him, do not believe he abandoned his child.

I failed him before anyone else could.

Clara read the final sentence twice.

“Your father knew Thomas was in danger.”

“Yes.”

“Did he protect him?”

“No.”

The word carried no excuse.

Julian’s father chose the organization over the accountant trying to expose it.

Mikhail’s father arranged Thomas’s murder.

The body was hidden beneath a construction site owned by a Rostova company.

Julian discovered the truth years later.

By then, the building had become a hospital wing.

Recovering the body would have required revealing decades of crimes.

Julian remained silent.

Clara placed the letter down.

“You knew my father did not leave me.”

“I suspected.”

“You watched me serve coffee for four seasons at Highcrest.”

“I did not know you were his daughter until tonight.”

“You knew his name.”

“I knew Thomas had a child named Clara.”

“I did not know where she was.”

Her anger rose until the room felt too small.

“You built your empire on the same silence that buried him.”

“Yes.”

Julian did not defend himself.

Lila watched him carefully.

“Are you confessing to concealing a homicide?”

“I am providing the location and records.”

Julian handed her another file.

It contained property maps, payments, and names.

The evidence implicated dead men, retired officers, and several active associates.

It also implicated Julian in financial crimes.

“You could go to prison,” Clara said.

“I know.”

“Why now?”

Julian looked toward Bishop, who rested near the office door with a bandaged shoulder.

“Because Mateo nearly died carrying evidence I should have released years ago.”

“Because your father’s name was used to frighten you into believing he abandoned you.”

“And because a woman I intended to marry kicked you while you protected something I love.”

Clara shook her head.

“Do not make this about me.”

“I am not.”

“You are the person who made it impossible for me to keep pretending silence was protection.”

Lila accepted the files.

Federal authorities were contacted.

Julian’s legitimate accounts were placed under review.

Several of his men walked away before investigators arrived.

Others agreed to cooperate.

The Rostova organization began cracking from within.

Then Mikhail called Julian.

His voice came through the office speakers.

“I have Mateo.”

“I know.”

“I also have Vanessa.”

Clara looked toward Julian.

Vanessa was supposed to be under private security at Highcrest.

Mikhail had taken her.

“She tried to run,” Mikhail said.

“She thought she could blame everything on me.”

Julian’s voice remained steady.

“What do you want?”

“The memory card.”

“And Clara Hayes.”

Clara’s stomach tightened.

Mikhail continued.

“Thomas hid the final account code in something he gave his daughter.”

“She has been carrying it all these years.”
