Chapter 8 - THE HOTEL BENEATH THE MOUNTAIN

The floor broke beneath the center tables.

Vanessa’s chair slid toward the opening.

Julian caught the back of it.

An agent cut her restraints.

Mateo crawled toward Bishop.

Clara remained trapped against Mikhail’s chest near the mine tunnel.

Smoke thickened across the ballroom.

Mikhail pulled her into the darkness.

The blade left her side.

He needed both hands to carry the memory card and whistle.

Clara stumbled along the narrow rail passage.

Her father’s notebook had warned that the eastern tunnel ended at a collapsed shaft.

Mikhail did not know the tunnels.

She did.

“You cannot reach the lower road this way,” she said.

“Then you will show me another route.”

“There isn’t one.”

He struck her across the face.

Clara tasted blood.

She kept walking.

Behind them, Bishop barked.

The sound moved closer.

Mikhail turned and fired into the darkness.

The shot echoed.

No cry followed.

Clara forced herself not to react.

At the next junction, she deliberately chose the eastern passage.

Mikhail noticed the old warning symbol on the wall.

“What does that mean?”

“Flood line.”

It was partly true.

Water had weakened the shaft.

The ground beyond the next bend could not support both of them.

Clara stopped.

“Give me the whistle.”

“No.”

“You think it makes you important?”

“My father trusted me with it.”

“Your father was a bookkeeper who forgot his place.”

Clara looked directly at him.

“He remembered exactly who he was.”

“That is why men like you were afraid of him.”

Mikhail lunged.

Clara stepped sideways.

The wooden platform beneath his feet cracked.

He caught the rail before falling into the shaft.

The memory card slipped from his hand and disappeared below.

He held the whistle in the other.

“Help me.”

Clara stood over him.

Fourteen years of unanswered grief pressed against the moment.

This man had helped bury her father.

He had kidnapped Mateo.

He had planned her death.

She could step away.

The mine would keep another secret.

Then Bishop appeared through the smoke.

Blood marked his bandage, but he remained standing.

He looked from Clara to Mikhail.

Clara heard her father’s recorded voice.

Do not use this money to become powerful.

Use it to make powerful people less capable of hurting others.

She removed a safety cable from the wall.

She looped it around the rail and lowered the hook.

“Take it.”

Mikhail stared at her.

“You are saving me?”

“No.”

“I am preserving a witness.”

He grabbed the cable.

Federal agents reached the passage and pulled him onto stable ground.

Mikhail was placed in restraints.

He looked at Clara with hatred.

“You are just a waitress.”

Clara wiped blood from her mouth.

“And you still lost.”

Bishop leaned against her leg.

Julian arrived moments later with Mateo supported against his shoulder.

The old security chief saw the whistle.

Tears filled his uninjured eye.

“Thomas made it work.”

Clara looked at him.

“You knew where I was.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you come?”

“Because I was a coward.”

Mateo did not hide behind loyalty or orders.

“I thought staying away kept you alive.”

“I was wrong.”

Clara nodded.

May you like

She was not ready to forgive him.

She was ready to hear the rest.
